Riga: Sveshnikov Upsets Karpov on the First Day of the Match

Two starting games have been played in the friendly match in Riga between Anatoly Karpov and Evgeny Sveshnikov. The match consists of six games with the 25+10 time control.

In the first duel, the former World Champion tried to make use of the microscopic opening advantage as White, but Sveshnikov's defence in the rook endgame was very confident, even though the task wasn't really difficult. The second encounter was much more interesting from the very beginning, since Karpov chose the unexpected 1...c5 (instead of his usual 1...c6) after White's 1.е4. This was followed by 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 e6, that is Karpov played the very moves his opponent considers the best for Black.

However, it looks like Sveshnikov managed to take his prominent opponent by surprise, choosing 4.0-0 Nge7 5.d4!? Karpov's next moves took him a lot of time, but it didn't help him to equalize. The game saw fewer than twenty moves when Black has run out of main time, beginning to use his additional seconds only. Shortly afterwards, Karpov lost on time in a hopeless position.

A post-mortem analysis of game 2

GM Alexey Shirov, who was commentating on the games live (and also had crushed Sveshnikov in the similar match), thinks that the outcome of the first playing day was decided by Sveshnikov being more warmed-up: "My experience tells me that you can hardly cope with the lack of practice irrespective of your former successes. It seems to me Sveshnikov had been more devoted to chess in recent years, and it mattered." Yet, we might see entirely different Karpov in the coming games, according to Shirov.

The veterans' battle will continue tomorrow at 17.00 Moscow time.
