The Ukrainian Championship: the Strong-Willed Victory by Ponomariov. The Burst Forward by Volokitin

The fourth round has been played at the Ukrainian Championship in Kiev. Ruslan Ponomariov, who lost to Yuri Kuzubov a day earlier, was able to successfully redeem himself in the encounter against Zahar Efimenko.

Zahar EFIMENKO - Ruslan PONOMARIOV

The Italian Game was played, but the position has a rather Spanish-Italian look to it.
13...d4!? It's the first bell. The mark is given for the character. Ruslan indicated his mood by avoiding calmer continuations.

14. Bxe6 Rxe6 15.Nf5 Kh7 16. cxd4 exd4 17. a3 g6 18. Ng3 a5 19. b3

White's last two moves can be criticised because now the black knight gets to c3 very comfortably. On the other hand, this choice was a conscious decision by White. He thought (probably not without a reason) that it's better to let the knight in than allow to block the whole of queenside. To some extent, the knight doesn't bother that much.
19...Nd5 20. Qc2 Nc3 21. Rf1 Bg7 22. Bd2 b5 23. Rae1 Ne7 24. Nh2 Raa6 25. f4 f5 26. Nf3 c5 27. Ne5 b4 28. a4 Qc7 29. Nc4 Bf6

White's and Black's actions were quite logical until this point. Zahar's next move gave the opponent serious chances.
30. exf5?! (Possibly, it's better to just stand still: 30. Kh2) 30... Nxf5 31. Rxe6 Rxe6 32. Ne4

32...Bh4?! The following was practically winning: 32... Qd8! It's hard for White to make a move. The capture on e4 is threatened, followed by d3.
33. Rf3 Ne2+ 34. Kh1 g5 Not willing to return to c3, which would have been, strange as it seems, the best decision.
35. Qd1 But now White doesn't want to force the draw after 35. Be1 Bxe1 36. Qxe2 Ng3+ 37. Rxg3 Bxg3 38. Nxg5+ hxg5 39. Qxe6 Qxf4).

35... Nc3 36. Qf1?! It's better to play 36. Qc2.
36... Nxe4 37. dxe4 Ng3+ 38. Rxg3 Bxg3 39. fxg5 Qg7 40. Qf3 Bc7 41. Qf5+ Qg6 42. Qxc5 Bg3 43. Qa7+ Kg8

44. gxh6? And this is already the end. It was necessary to play 44. Qa8+.  It's possible that Zahar didn't go for this variation because of 44...Qe8 45. Qd5 Qf7 46. Qxd4 Qf1+ 47. Qg1 Qd3 48. Qe3 Qb1+ 49.Bc1 Rxe4 50. Qxg3 Qxc1+ 51. Kh2 Qxg5. But it's all a lot simpler in the game.
44... Rxe4 45. Qxa5 Rf4 46. Qd5+ Kh7 0-1

The duel between Alexander Areshchenko and Anton Korobov was quite interesting. The complex struggle with unbalanced material led to peace at the end. Yuri Vovk won his first game. Pavel Eljanov took a break by making a draw with Yuriy Kuzubov, which allowed Andrei Volokitin to catch him as he won against Evgenij Miroshnichenko.
