In the interview to Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung Garry Kasparov announced for the first time that he will probably put himself forward for the position of the FIDE President at the nearest elections in August 2014. According to him, it's also possible that he would support some other candidate, but the most important thing is to replace Kirsan Ilyumzhinov.

"Ilyumzhinov causes colossal harm to chess. None of the international organisations would work with FIDE until an internet search about its president stops coming up with the names of Assad, Gaddafi and Saddam Hussein", said Kasparov.

"At the end of April Ilyumzhinov visited the President of Syria Bashar al-Assad in Damascus and agreed youth chess projects with him. A year ago Ilyumzhinov flew to Tripoli and played chess against Gaddafi live on TV, while Gaddafi's troops were fighting against the rebels, supported by NATO. Newspaper scandals started back in 1996, when Ilyumzhinov gave Baghdad the right to hold the Chess World Championship. After the protests, he moved the final encounter to his homeland of Kalmykia", reminds the journalist.

The author also writes that Kasparov tried to replace Ilyumzhinov in 2010. Back then he supported Anatoly Karpov's candidacy for the FIDE President. However, Karpov didn't succeed because, according to Kasparov's words, the elections were held in Khanty-Mansiysk and the management of the regional chess federation supported Ilyumzhinov. Kasparov states that the elections will be held in Norwegian Tromso in 2014 and there won't be manipulations.

The author gives an opinion from one of the FIDE functionaries, which is considered to be right by many, that putting Kasparov forward would be beneficial to the federation, because the Kremlin would give out bribes in the order of millions to prevent success of the person who is openly against Putin.

The author reports that Kasparov's companies, including lobbying of chess education in schools at the Euro Parliament level, are financed by sponsors from the USA, England and Belgium. "He wants to attract at least a third of the delegates to his side during the FIDE Congress at the September Chess Olympiad in Istanbul. According to his words, it's necessary to make it easier to obtain voting mandates and, thereby, make it harder to sell votes. The scandal, which would inevitably arise because the organiser Ali Nihat Yazici (one of the main supporters of Ilyumzhinov) has put up gigantic prices on hotel rooms and excluded arbiters from seven countries (including Germany), would probably play into the hands of Kasparov", is the author's prognosis.
