Alexander Grischuk told about some of the pernicious habits among the representatives of today's chess elite in the article Chess Kings published by the Russian Reporter magazine:

"Once smoking was common among the chess players. A lot of World Champions were smoking: Alekhine, Tal, Spassky, Korchnoi. Now there's a quite strange situation - from a hundred best players perhaps only 5 people are smoking. This brings inconveniences. One should usually ask the organizers before the tournament for the smoking zone to be located in the area of accessibility. Last year I've played in Wijk-aan -Zee and in order to smoke I had to go outside the hall to the pavilion; moreover, not only the weather was nasty - 0 degrees, strong winds, - but I should also go there together with the arbiter in order not to get any hints on my way there. Of course the rivals saw that and as soon as I was going out they were making a move. So, that's how it was during the entire tournament - that's nonsense! By the way, the young players don't drink and that looks completely strange."
