Veselin Topalov Tested Out the New Mascot of the ECU and Sofia Won Against Zagreb With a Pretty Score 30-20 (PHOTO)

There was a friendly match on 50 boards between Sofia and Zagreb, held in the Bulgarian town of Bankya. The team of the Bulgarian capital won with the score 30-20, avenging the defeat in the match from 70 years ago.

The competition was opened by the mayors of Sofia Yordanka Fandakova and Zagreb Milan Bandic, as well as by the President of the European Chess Union (ECU) and the Bulgarian Chess Federation Silvio Danailov. The guests' team was represented by grandmasters Mladen Palac, Robert Zelcic, Krunoslav Hulak and Ante Brkic, while the hosts' team by Kiril Georgiev, Antoaneta Stefanova, Boris Chatalbashev and Dejan Bojkov.

Veselin Topalov also attended the event.

The FIDE World Ex-Champion became the first of the European chess players who personally tested out abilities of the ECU's new mascot: the racing horse Ching Van Berkenbroeck.

Danailov presented the owner of this elite horse Yuri Valev with the official document, confirming that his horse has now become the mascot of the European Chess Union.
