The fighting resources in today's fifth game of the World Championship match Anand - Gelfand held in Moscow, were exhausted in only an hour and a half after the start of the encounter.

ANAND - GELFAND
The World Championship match 2012 (Game 5)

Sicilian defence
1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 e5
Gelfand practically hasn't applied the Sveshnikov system (Chelyabinsk variation) in recent years. It's noteworthy that the founder of the system has visited the match today.
6.Ndb5 d6 7.Bg5 a6 8.Na3 b5 9.Nd5 Be7 10.Bxf6 Bxf6

11.c4
A very popular continuation. In the past it was common to play c3.
11...b4 12.Nc2 0-0 13.g3 a5 14.Bg2 Bg5 15.0-0 Be6 16.Qd3 Bxd5 17.cxd5 Nb8

18.a3
A novelty, without an obvious strengthening. Earlier a3 was played after 18.h4 - with the similar ideas.
18...Na6 19.axb4 Nxb4 20.Nxb4 axb4 21.h4 Bh6 22.Bh3 Qb6

23.Bd7?!
The Ukrainian GM Anton Korobov on the air of Chess-News radio (аs well as the Houdini program) suggested 23.Qc4! Qc5 as the main line. Earlier Korobov, unlike our second guest, Boris Gelfand's long-term coach Albert Kapengut, didn't see any troubles for Black in the established structure.

However, at the press conference Gelfand informed that he wasn't going to play...Qc5 "on no account".
23...b3 24.Bc6 Ra2 25.Rxa2 bxa2 26.Qa3
Now White's hopes for gaining advantage just melted, the game has been completely equalized and emasculated.
26...Rb8 27.Qxa2 1/2
