The Ukrainian Rapid and Blitz Championships: a Success for the Players from Kharkiv and Nikolayev

The Rapid and Blitz Ukrainian Championships were held in Alushta. The rapidplay was played over two days (the time limit was 10 minutes for the whole game + 10 seconds per move); blitz was played in one day (the time limit was 3 minutes + 2 seconds).

The champions are:
Rapidplay, men: Anton Korobov (2678, Kharkiv) - 9.5 out of 11 (81 participants)
Rapidplay, women: Anna Ushenina (2454, Kharkiv) - 7.5 out of 9 (16 participants)
Blitz, men: Alexandr Bortnik (2367, Nikolayev) - 9.5 out of 11 (68 participants)
Blitz, women: Ushenina, 9 out of 11 (16 participants)

Bortnik's success in the blitz is worth a particular attention, as he overtook almost twenty grandmasters among his opponents. The next places in the blitz were taken by the international master Andrey Baryshpolets and the rating-favourites Alexander Moiseenko and Korobov. The detailed results of the tournaments are published on the web site of the Ukrainian Chess Federation.

The Semi-Final of the Ukrainian Championship in the classical chess was held in Alushta earlier. As it became known to Chess-News, the FIDE World Champion of 2002-2004 Ruslan Ponomariov agreed to participate in this year's Championship.

In the second half of May the Club Championship of Ukraine will also be held in Alushta.
