The U.S. Championship: Kaidanov Won Against Kamsky and Replaced Him in the Leading Duo. Seirawan Started Winning

The fourth round of the U.S. Championship brought a surprise: in the fight of the Russian immigrants Gregory Kaidanov beat the titled Gata Kamsky. Kamsky sacrificed two pawns for activity as he exited the opening, but he couldn't equalise and was eventually outplayed.

Yasser Seirawan, who started with three losses, won against Alejandro Ramirez. It was all decided in the curious endgame.

SEIRAWAN - RAMIREZ

White already managed to miss an earlier win. But here Black made a mistake, which ended up being decisive. Instead of 86...Be5? 87.Ng4!, with the decisive transfer of the knight to f6 and a speedy conclusion of the game, it was necessary to cause the g5 pawn push by 86...Rc5 89.g6 Rc8 or even by the extravagant 86...Bf6 87.g6 Rс8, using stalemate motifs. In both variations, in case of 88.Nf5 Black plays 88...Bg7!.

And now after 89.Nxg7, the draw is forced by 89...Rc7!. Otherwise, it's difficult to suggest constructive ideas for White (variations with the rooks exchange don't give anything). The conclusion appears to be that Ramirez missed a real chance to save the game.

In another decisive game Ray Robson beat Robert Hess in a rare variation of the ancient Italian Game system.

Three other games, including the encounter between Alexander Onischuk and Hikaru Nakamura, ended as draws. The rating-favourite of the tournament played the following opening with black: 1.d4 e6 2.c4 b6 3.Nc3 Bb7 and achieved a promising position.

ONISCHUK - NAKAMURA

10...Na6! with good counterplay. White was fighting for a draw in this game and eventually Onischuk managed to get the satisfactory outcome.

The table is headed by Kaidanov and Nakamura, who have 3 points after four rounds. They will play against each other in the fifth round: Nakamura with white.

There was the first free day in the Women's Championship on Friday. Anna Zatonskih, Irina Krush and Iryna Zenyuk are leading with 2.5 out of 3.
