The 1st game of the World Championship match Anand - Gelfand has started today at 15:00 in the State Tretyakov Gallery. The Indian plays White, but in a figurative sense the challenger made "the first move", when he played the Grunfeld Defense. It turned out that the Israeli has never applied this opening for Black in his official games.

Nowadays the Grunfeld defence is a topical opening, where White can hardly gain the advantage.

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.Nf3 Bg7 5.cxd5 Nxd5 6.e4 Nxc3 7.bxc3 c5 8.Bb5+ Nc6

Here Anand played a rare 9.d5!? According to statistics after 9...Qa5 10.Rb1: Black achieved 5 victories, 6 draws took place, while White has never won - 0. However, at the moment it's hard to talk about any kind of advantage for Black, except as the statistical one. Moreover, most of the games were played by the unprofessional players.
