The Shortest Route to Victory

Playing ten moves against Khalifman was enough for Iordachescu to take the 1st place in Nakhchivan Open

A strong Nakhchivan Open has finished today in Azerbaijan. Viorel Iordachescu, who grabbed the solo lead after the 4th round and strengthened it with a victory in Round 5, managed to maintain his lead till the end of the tournament. The last four drawn games were enough for him to stay on the top of the table on a tie-break, despite the fact that Belarusian Sergei Zhigalko and Azerbaijani Eltaj Safarli caught him gathering 6.5 out of 9.

Moldovan player's game against the former FIDE champion from St. Petersburg can't be called eventful: a theoretical draw by the repetition of moves.
IORDACHESCU - KHALIFMAN
Nakhchivan 2012 (Round 9)
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 Nf6 4.O-O Nxe4 5.Qe2 Nd6 6.Bxc6 dxc6 7.Qxe5+ Qe7 8.Qa5 Qd8 9.Qe5+ Qe7 10.Qa5 Qd8 1/2
Тhe tournament situation at the moment of the agreement on draw, perhaps, didn't inspire the rivals on making reckless decisions. And both had different reasons - Khalifman was one point behind of his opponent. Iordachescu's plan, which was actually deciding the way the game has developed, worked out.

Other decisive games of the round turned out to be quite fighting. The encounter of Tiviakov and Zhigalko, which was deciding the fate of the prize winning places, was finished peacefully only after 69th move.

TIVIAKOV - ZHIGALKO S.

It seemed as the rivals made no headway before they've decided to agree on a draw. The pawn, conquered at the early stage of the game (after Black's inaccurate move 38) doesn't give White the real advantage. White is unable to strengthen the position.

Maybe White has missed its best chance on move 44.

Tiviakov avoided 44.Rb7! Qc5 45.Rdd7 Rxa3 46.Rxe7 Rxa2 - which had sense only if followed by 47.Qb1!!, and only on 47...Ra1 white answers 48.Qb6!. And it turns out that the exchange o the queens doesn't help Black to save f7-pawn.

AGAYEV N. - ALEKSANDROV
Nakhchivan 2012 (Round 9)

If White wasn't locked in zugzwang, it seems that the only chance to break its defence was moving Black king on a5 with the further sacrifice of the bishop on c4, and after bxc4 Black king goes on a4, or if the situation allows plays ...b3 immediately.

However, Black didn't need to go on with these hard calculations because White is forced to either let the Black king on g4 or to give the Black bishop the possibility to go on e2, the third continuation, which actually took place in the game, moved White king from the queenside. All of these continuations are equally destructive:

a) It's clear: 59.Nf1 Kg4!, and after 60.Nh2+ the king takes h3 with the immediate victory (that's why it wasn't recommended to put the pawn on h3).

b) If White let the bishop on e2, it will move to d3 and having the king on c1 (for instance: 59.Kc1 Be2 60.Kc2 Bd3+ 61.Kc1 h3) white is again locked in zugzwang - and mostly not because of the idea ...Bb1 (after 62.Kd2), as long as White can put its king on c2 if taking a2-pawn, but because of 62...Bxc4!, and after 63.bxc4 b3 White are unable to stop the black pawn.

c) White has chosen 59.Ke1, allowing 59...Bf7!, and played 60.Nf1 (trying to bring over the knight for the king can't stop the pawn on the queenside 60...Bxc4 (here we can note that winning was 60...h3, but should be assumed any of the options of the knight activation through g3?) 61.bxc4 b3 62.Nd2 bxa2 63.Nb3 h3 64.Kf1

Black's passed pawns are stopped, but here the Black king activates - it moves to f3 easily solving everything.
64...Kg4 (White is again in zugzwang: if it was Black's turn to move it'd be harder because the king would be forced to move in a triangle like shape, as long as immediately moving on f3 would be senseless because of the check from d2)  65.Kg1 Kf3 66.Nd2+ Ke2 67.Nb3 Kd1 0-1
(Mikhail Golubev's commentary).
