Ivanchuk is leading in Havana after two rounds

In the second round of the Capablanca Memorial tournament in Cuba there was a quick draw between the Russians Vladimir Potkin and Ian Nepomniachtchi, while the other two games ended decisively in the main group.

Vasily Ivanchuk has once again in his career won against his frequent opponent: the World Blitz Ex-champion Leinier Dominguez.

In this variation of the 3.Bb5+ Sicilian Black must be somewhat precise. (Although, in 2009 Ivanchuk, being in a bad form in the Sofia tournament, lost here with White to Alexey Shirov by getting in a worse position via known motifs: 11...Rac8 12.b3 e6 13.Rc1 Rfd8 14.Qd2 d5 15.exd5 exd5 16.c5? Nxd4 17.Bxd4 Ne4!, and so on.)

This time Black wasn't able to fully equalise; it's possible that Dominguez lost his guard at around moves 18-20. Ivanchuk was able to methodically outplay his opponent after a long struggle. This is how it ended:

Threatening the checkmate (Rh6); the only way to defend would be to give up the bishop (...Bf8).

Prior to that Laznicka avenged his defeat to Dominguez in the starting round by sending Yuniesky Quesada into the "minus score".

Everything is great for Black: he is better. There is an interesting move 27...Ng4. Instead, there followed the incredible:
27...bxa4? 28.Bxc4 Nxc4 29.Bxb8
Black ended up a piece down. Still, he had considerable options of resistance in this position, but Quesada made another inaccuracy by taking on b8. Black's position became significantly worse and he eventually lost.

Ivanchuk is the sole leader with 1.5 out of 2.
