Ukraine’s Ushenina Wins Women’s European Championship

Anna is back with a vengeance

Anna Ushenina won the Women’s World Championship at the knock-out tournament in Khanty-Mansiisk back in 2012, but she hasn’t been very visible since then. Now, however, she is back with a vengeance – as testified by her victory in the Individual Women's Chess Championship in Mamaia, Romania.

The top 14 players (above) qualify for the next knock-out world championship, although neither the dates nor location have been set
Anna recorded six wins and five draws. The key game was in round 8, when the tournament’s erstwhile leader Antoaneta Stefanova from Bulgaria was forced to concede pole position to the tenacious Ukrainian.

STEFANOVA - USHENINA (8th round)

Antoaneta had begun with the Larsen Opening, signaling her aggressive intentions from the start and pointing both her bishops at the enemy kingside. In a complex open game the players traded blows and Stefanova’s strategy came close to gaining a point. Here though she should have added her rook to the attack with 19.Rd3! For example: 19…h5 (other continuations are no better) 20.g4! (20.Rg3!? Kf8 21.Bd3 Qc6 22.Rf2 Rac8 23.Bxg6 fxg6 24.Rxg6 Qxc4 25.Bxf6 Bxf6 26.Rxf6+ Ke7 27.Rxe6+ Qxe6 28.Re2 with a decisive advantage is also possible) 20...hxg4 21.Bxg4 Kg7 22.f5 Rh8 23.Qg3 gxf5 24.Bxf5+ Kf8 25.Bg4, with a decisive attack.

However, after 19.Qh6? Ne8 20.d5 Bf8 Ushenina’s king was out of danger and she went on to outbattle her opponent.

By now White’s position is lost due to the ‘principle of two weaknesses’: these being Black's passed pawn and White's own king. Nevertheless, the best way to fight on would have been to head for a rook ending. The game could have continued 55.Qxe7+ Rxe7 56.Rb3 Re4! (56...Rb7 57.Kg3 Kg7 58.Kf3 Kf6 59.Ke3 Ke6? is less accurate and misses the chance to win [though it’s not too late to get back on the right track with 59...Re7+! and 60…Re4]: 60.Kd4 Kd6 61.Rg3) 57.Kg3 Kg7 58.Kf3 Kf7 59.Rd3 Re8 60.Rb3 Rb8 61.Ke3 Ke6 62.Kd4 Kd6 63.Kc4 Rc8+ 64.Kd4 Re8 65.Rg3 Re4+ 66.Kd3 Rxf4 67.Rxg6+ Ke5 68.Rb6 Rxh4 69.g3 Rg4 70.Rb5+ Kf6 71.Ke2 Re4+ 72.Kf3 Rc4 73.Rb8 Rc3+ 74.Kf4 b3, and Black wins.
55.Qc8?! Now, however, Ushenina launches a mating attack.
55...Re1 56.g3 Qe2 57.Qb7+ Kh6 58.Rb3 Qd1 0-1 (Commentary by Alexei Yarovinsky)

In other five games the wins were celebrated by the players with black pieces: Khotenashvili defeated Cmilyte, Ju Wenjun beat Ushenina, Dzagnidze defeated Girya, Kosteniuk took an upper hand on Tuvshintugs and Hou Yifan was stronger than Kateryna Lahno.

  • The first decisive game in the Capablanca Memorial in Cuba occurred after an ending in the second round: Vassily Ivanchuk won without much difficulty against Zoltan Almasi.

  • The self-declared Republic of Kosovo is host to the European Chess Championship that kicked off on Thursday. The competition sees a fair mix of strong grandmasters and many amateurs. In fact too many: we have the impression that such a large number of unrated or lowly-rated local players has never competed in such a tournament.

  • Georgian women players continue dominating over the European Chess Club Cup taking place in Skopje, Macedonia. In Round 4, "Nona" gained a confident win over one of its direct rivals "Ugra".

"Ugra": Anna Ushenina, Natalia Pogonina, Lilit Mkrtchian, Baira Kovanova

  • Natalya Zhukova close to winning in Chakvi

  • The rating outsider of the 1st stage of the Women's Grand Prix Batchimeg Tuvshintugs defeated the former World Champion Hou Yifan in Round 3.

This isn't Hou Yifan's first loss against Mongolian players: Chinese has already been defeated by Batkhuyag Munguntuul, that however, happened when Hou Yifan was much younger.

  • The top game in the European Championship in Gjakova has ended with Inarkiev winning as Black against David Navara.

  • The traditional festival is underway in Hoogeveen, the Netherlands. The main competition gathered four GMs: Michael Adams, Wesley So, Loek van Wely and Robin van Kampen.

In Round 1 more experienced van Wely and Adams lost against So and van Kampen respectively. The second round games finished peacefully.

  • With two rounds to go in the European Championship at Kosovo Ernesto Inarkiev is firmly in pole position. However, the battle is not only about first place. The players are also competing for invitations to the World Cup (the first 23 participants get a ticket) as well as for cash (22 main prizes plus 10 additional prizes).
