Nothing attractive about Gjakova except the chess games

Gjakova seems to be a bit of a dump. At least that’s what the players are telling us – and the photos.

So is the environment impacting the games? And for better or for worse? Those at the top of the table and those nearer the bottom probably have differing answers to these questions.

Our analyst Alexei Yarovinsky was particularly intrigued by three games in the fifth round. Those games may have been quite different from each other but they were all aesthetically pleasing in their own way.

Sergei ZHIGALKO - David NAVARA
European Championship 2016, 5th round

Caro-Kann Defence

1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5 4.Nf3 e6 5.Be2 c5 6.Be3 cxd4 7.Nxd4 Ne7 8.Nd2 Nbc6 9.N2f3 Be4 10.0-0

10...Bxf3! Although a bishop is normally worth more than a knight this is not the first time that David has gone for this type of piece swap. The immediate 10...Ng6? is met by the unpleasant 11.Nxc6 bxc6 12.Ng5.
11.Nxf3 Qc7 12.Bf4? The decision to attack the pawn is a mistake – White’s dark-squared bishop is blunted here. He should have played aggressively with: 12.c4! Black cannot play 12...Nxe5??, as opening up the centre, from where it’s too late to evacuate the Black king, leads to nasty consequences for Black after 13.Nxe5 Qxe5 14.cxd5
.
12...Ng6 13.Bg3 0-0-0 14.c4 h5 15.h4 Kb8 16.cxd5 Rxd5 17.Qa4 Be7 18.Rfd1 Rhd8 19.Rxd5 Rxd5 20.Qe4 Qb6 21.Bc4 Rd8

22.b3? White has weak pawns, so he should have tried to change the unpleasant flow of events: 22.Bxe6! fxe6 23.Qxg6 Qxb2 24.Rf1 Qxa2 25.Qxg7 with a double-edged position.
22...Nd4 23.Rd1 He could have considered 23.Qe3!? If 23...Nf5?! 24.Qxb6 axb6 25.Be2 Nxg3 26.fxg3 Rd5 27.Rd1 White has good drawing chances. A stronger reply is 23...Bc5! 24.Rd1 Ne7 25.Ng5 Rd7 and Black retains his advantage.

23...Nf5 24.Rxd8+ Qxd8 25.Be2 Qa5

26.a4? ? 26.Qa4! Qxa4 27.bxa4 Nxg3 28.fxg3 was stronger, with chances to draw the inferior ending.
26...Bc5 27.Kh2 Qb6 28.a5? This pawn sac isn’t justified. 28.Qd3! a6 29.Qd7 Nge7 30.Bd3 Nxg3 31.fxg3 Qxb3 32.Be4 Qb4 33.Ng5 Ka7! 34.Bf3 Nf5 35.Ne4 (35.Nxf7? Bf2! and 35.Qxf7? Qb1! both lose) 35...Qe1 36.Qd1 was more resistant, retaining drawing chances.

28...Qxa5 29.Ng5 Nxg3 30.fxg3 Qa1 31.Nf3 a6 32.Bc4

32...Ne7! The knight’s journey is now technical!
33.Qh7? In an already poor position White commits suicide, although he could still have caused his opponent problems with: 33.g4! hxg4 34.Qxg4. If 34...Nf5? 35.Bd3 and White still hangs on. Stronger though is 34...Be3! 35.Qxg7 Nf5 36.Qxf7 Bf4+ with the idea of winning the queen after 37.Kh3? Qh1+ 38.Kg4 Nh6+. White can struggle on with 37.g3 37...Qb2+ 38.Kh3 Qf2 39.Qg8+ Ka7 40.Nd4 (after 40.Bxe6 Black also wins: 40..Nh6 41.Qg7 Qxf3 42.Kh2 Qe2+ 43.Kh3 Qe4 44.Kh2 Qc2+ 45.Kh3 Qc6! 46.gxf4 Qh1+ 47.Kg3 Qg1+) 40...Qxd4 41.gxf4 Qe3+, and the queen + knight tandem gradually eats up the White pawns: 42.Kg2 Nxh4+ 43.Kh1 Qf3+ 44.Kg1 Qd1+ 45.Kf2 Qd2+ 46.Kf1 Qxf4+ 47.Kg1 Qe3+ 48.Kf1 Qf3+ 49.Kg1 Qd1+ 50.Kf2 Qc2+ 51.Kf1 Qf5+ 52.Kg1 Nf3+ 53.Kg2 Nd4. The rest is simple technique.
33...Nf5 34.Bd3 Nh6 Now the knight heads for g4 to checkmate his opponent and White resigned. If White tries 35.Bb1 Black wins with 35...Ng4+ 36.Kh3 g6
. 0-1

Slav Defence specialist Najer found himself outplayed, although the opening wasn’t to blame...

Aleksey GOGANOV - Evgeniy NAJER
European Championship 2016, 5th round

Slav Defence
1.Nf3 d5 2.d4 Nf6 3.c4 c6 4.e3 Bg4 5.Qb3 Qb6 6.Nc3 e6 7.Nh4 Be7 8.h3 Bh5 9.g4 Bg6 10.Nxg6 hxg6 11.Bg2 g5 12.0-0 Nbd7 13.Rd1 Qxb3 14.axb3 a6 15.f3 0-0-0 Evgeniy deviates from his own game from the Russian higher league in 2014 against Daniil Yuffa, where he continued 15...Nh7.
16.e4 White has the bishop pair and the centre, but Black has counterplay along the dark squares.
16...dxc4 Or 16...dxe4 17.fxe4 e5 18.d5 Nc5 19.b4 Nb3 20.Ra4 with an advantage for White.
17.bxc4 Nh7 18.Na4 It was maybe better to move the knight in the other direction with 18.Ne2!?

18...e5? he should have stuck to his plan: 18...Nhf8! and then swinging the knight to f4.
19.d5 White gains space in the centre and his advantage is now clear
.
19...Nc5 20.b4 Nxa4 21.Rxa4 Nf8

22.Be3? It would have been better to unpin the rook: 22.Re1! Black cannot successfully create a blockade: 22...c5 23.Be3 Nd7 24.Ra5 cxb4 25.c5 and White has a large advantage. Instead of a positional solution Goganov seeks complications.
22...Ne6! 23.Rda1 Nd4 24.Bxd4 exd4 25.c5 Rh6 Black could have considered 25...cxd5!? For example: 26.exd5 Rxd5 27.f4 Rdd8 28.c6 bxc6 29.Rxa6 Rh6, and it’s unclear how White can prosecute his attack.
26.d6 Bf6 27.f4? The idea of sacrificing two pawns is objectively unsound. On the other hand, if only ‘objectively correct’ moves were played in tournaments chess would have ended years ago.
27...gxf4 28.g5 Bxg5 29.e5 Re6? Evgeniy probably failed to spot his opponent’s tactic, otherwise he would have found the correct 29...d3! That said, without computer back-up this position is very messy with an unclear outcome
.

30.Rxa6!! A beautiful sac. Were Black’s pawn already on d3 and looking to queen it would be too late to play this.
30...bxa6? 30...f3? 31.Bxf3 wouldn’t change the outcome. The only defence was 30...Kd7!! The game could have continued: 31.Rb6 Rxe5 32.Rxb7+ Ke6 33.Bxc6 Re3.

In this sharp position both sides have chances to win, although White does seem to be better. For example:
34.Rd1 Bf6 35.Kg2 Rg3+ (35...Re2+ is hardly better: 36.Kf1 Re3 37.Re1 d3 38.Bb5 d2 39.Rxe3+ fxe3 40.Ba4 Ra8 41.Bb3+ Kf5 42.Ke2 Ra1 43.Bd1 Ke6 44.b5 Rc1 45.Rc7 Bd8 46.c6 Bh4 47.Rc8 Kxd6 48.b6 Bd8 49.Rxd8+ Kxc6 50.Rg8 g6 51.Rg7 Kxb6 52.Rxf7 Rc5 53.Re7 with a decisive advantage) 36.Kf2 d3 37.Re1+ Kf5 38.Rxf7 Kg6 39.Rxf6+ Kxf6 40.d7 Rxh3 41.Bg2 d2! 42.Rd1 Rd3 43.c6 Rh8 (after 43...Ke7 White also wins with: 44.c7 Kxd7 45.cxd8Q+ Kxd8 46.Ke2 Rb3 47.Rxd2+ Kc7 48.Rd4) 44.Ke2 Rd6 45.b5 g5 46.Rxd2 Ke7 47.Rxd6 Kxd6 48.Bf3 Rf8 49.Bh5 Kc7 50.Be8 f3+ 51.Kf2 g4 52.b6+.

31.Bxc6 The extra rook isn’t enough to save the Black king.
31...Rd7 32.Rxa6 Rb7 33.Bxb7+ Kxb7 34.b5 Rxe5 35.c6+ The White infantry head with determination to their target.
35...Kb8 36.c7+ Kb7 37.Rc6 Re1+ 38.Kg2 f3+ 39.Kxf3 Re3+ After making this move Najer nevertheless resigned. 1-0

Laurent Fressinet got among the leaders.

FRESSINET - DUBOV

13...g5? This all-out attack was a brave but flawed decision. He should have calmly sat tight and continued with development: 13...Be7.
14.fxg5 Nh7 15.g6 fxg6 16.Nxe4! dxe4 17.Qxe4+ Kd8 18.Qxg6 Although material is essentially equal Black’s position is already lost due to the weakness of his king and the lack of harmony among his pieces.
18...Ndf6 19.0-0-0 Qe7 20.Ba5+ Rc7 21.Kb1 Kc8 22.Bxc7 Kxc7 23.Bd3 Nd7 23...Qxe3? 24.Rhe1 would have been hopeless
.
24.e4 Ng5 25.e5 Rh6

26.Qd6+! Laurent elegantly forces a transposition to a won endgame.
26...Kd8 27.Qxe7+ Kxe7 28.h4 Ne6 29.Bf5 b6 30.b4 Nc7 31.Rhf1 Nb8 32.Rf3 Kd8 33.Be4 Be7 34.Rf7 Ne6 35.Bf5 Nc7 36.Rxg7 Nd5 37.Rf1 Na6 37...Nxb4 loses after 38.Rg8+ Kc7 39.Be4 bxc5 40.Rf7.

38.a3 Ne3 39.Rf3 Nxf5 40.Rxf5 Nc7 41.Rff7 Nd5 42.Rh7 Rg6 43.Rfg7 1-0
