European Club Cup: Siberia Remains Undefeated With One Round to Go

Время публикации: 24.10.2015 05:26 | Последнее обновление: 25.10.2015 08:04

Vladimir Kramnik has been helping it enormously by crushing everyone on board 1

Yesterday, Siberia won yet another match, this time against Alcaloid which is #3 in the starting rank list. This means that the Russian team maintains perfect score being two points ahead of the last-year champion SOCAR and three more clubs.

Alcaloid - Siberia:
Ivanchuk 0-1 Kramnik
Aronian 1/2 Tomashevsky
Jakovenko 1/2 Grischuk
Li Chao 1-0 Andreikin
Kryvoruchko 1-0 Wang Yue
Korobov 1/2 Yu Yangyi

Levon Aronian, whose game was the last one to finish in the match, is accepting congratulations

GM Pavel Maletin, the captain of Siberia squad, shared his impressions with our website immediately after the end of the match:

"The battle was far from easy, but I hadn't been anticipating anything else. Only the victory would do for the Macedonian club because they were lagging behind. At the beginning of the match, Wang Yue was worse, while the other boards were promising us nothing special, so I wasn't hoping for more than one victory which would have meant only an overall draw. However, on board 1 Vassily Ivanchuk gave us a present that turned out to be crucial - he blundered a pawn in the rook endgame. Besides, Li Chao won a brilliant game, as he found a great resource 33.a4 in the time-trouble".

Vladimir Kramnik is by far the most notable player in the Russian club, perhaps as well as in the competition on the whole. His currently perfect score consists of the victories over Nepomniachtchi, Svidler, Topalov, and Ivanchuk. Now Kramnik's live rating is close to 2800 again.

KRAMNIK - NEPOMNIACHTCHI (round 3)

24...Ba8? A positional error. The moves like this one should be made only if nothing else works. If Nepomniachtchi realized that the diagram position was the critical moment of the game, he would exert himself and probably find 24...Ba6! 25.Bxc6 Bxe2! 26.Rxe2 Ra6 27.Bc5 (after 27.Rb1 Rb8 Black regains the piece as well) 27...Rxc6 28.Bxe7 Bxe7 29.Rxe7 Ra6 30.Rd2, and here the most precise move is 30...g5! with excellent drawing chances in the double rook ending.
25. Bc5! The bishop remained locked on a8 and then left the corner for a while only to return there before Black's resignation, while Kramnik has added yet another exhibit to his large collection of textbook endgames. 1-0 on move 49.

In the important match vs SOCAR, Kramnik beat his arch rival Veselin Topalov, also with surprising ease.

KRAMNIK - TOPALOV (round 5)

29.Rxd5! exd5 30.e6 R3c7 31.Rxd5 Qxe6 32.Qg5+ Kf8 33.Rxf5 Rf7 34.Qh6+ Ke8 35.Re5 Rc6 36.Qxh5 1-0

After the game, Kramnik described its course in the interview for our website. Besides, he told us a bit about his club, saying that the atmosphere inside the team is "fantastic".

Meanwhile, the tournament isn't over yet, as Siberia has to pass the final exam by facing Obiettivo (Leko, Karjakin, Nakamura, Vachier-Lagrave) today in the final round. The Italian club is 2 points behind the leader, as well as SOCAR, Mednyi Vsadnik (Svidler, Dominguez, Vitiugov), and Beer-Sheva (Roiz, Postny, Khuzman). If Kramnik isn't replaced he will be White, most likely against Leko, who has also defeated Ivanchuk the day before.

LEKO - IVANCHUK (round 5)

The Hungarian GM's position was extremely difficult for the most part of the middlegame, but the mutual time-trouble turns the tables.
36.Bg6!? The normal 36.Qxh6+ Ke7 followed by 37...Rg5 is quite bad for White. Objectively, the text move also loses, but this isn't easy to realize with just seconds left. Probably Ivanchuk didn't expect his ultra-solid opponent to be that vigorous, as Black got confused and lost the game in a couple of moves:
36...Rb7?! (he could take the bishop - 36...fxg6 37.hxg6 Ke8 keeping an extra rook for no real compensation, e.g. 38.Qf7+ Kd8 39.g7 Qg3!) 37.Rf1 Ke8?? After 37...c5! 38.Qxh6+ Ke7 intending с5-с4 Black's threats are still heavier.
38.Qg8+ Qf8 39.Bxf7+. Now the g2-rook is hanging, and Black ends up a pawn down in a ruined position, so Ivanchuk stopped the clocks. 1-0 (Notes by GM Andrey Deviatkin)

Last round top pairings:

Siberia (12) - Obiettivo (10)
Mednyi Vsadnik (10) - SOCAR (10)
Beer-Sheva (10) - Alcaloid (8)

Vladimir Tukmakov, the captain of SOCAR: "Our loss to Siberia was deserved. On that day, they were just better. It happens... but there is still one more round to go."

  • Georgian women players continue dominating over the European Chess Club Cup taking place in Skopje, Macedonia. In Round 4, "Nona" gained a confident win over one of its direct rivals "Ugra".

  • Nona wins the European Women's Club Cup

  • Malakhit from the Urals miss out on European qualification

  • As we have pointed out earlier Vladimir Kramnik has scored a number of impressive wins in team tournaments, going all the way back to last spring. He has been the driving force behind Sibir (Siberia), regularly chalking up full points for his team on top board. In the Russian Team Championship currently underway in Sochi the ex-World Champion plays sparingly, but to great effect: he has scored 3.5 points from his four games, and even his solitary draw was partially down to bad luck.

  • Russian men's team wins ETCC for the first time since 2007

  • The rivalry between Russia and China continues. It is not ten days since the end of the traditional annual training match between the men and women of the two countries, and now the two teams are again battling each other. But this time with different teams and a very unusual format.

  • Today in Danzhou, the sixth annual tournament ended, featuring several top players, two young hopefuls and two well-known foreign guests from Cuba and India, in a round robin event. The tournament will mainly be remembered for one particular game, which has been hailed as the "game of the century". Admittedly, the winner Wei Yi, who produced a whole series of !! moves, won only one other game in the event and finished fourth.

  • Sergey Karjakin singlehandedly takes Russia to victory in unusual match with China

  • The traditional tournament in Dortmund is proving very fighting: over half of the games in the first four rounds have ended decisively and not one has ended in an early draw. The most uncompromising of all are Vladimir Kramnik and Arkady Naiditsch.

After a defeat at the start, the ex-world champion has won three games in a row. Yesterday evening, it was Georg Meier who was unable to withstand Kramnik's pressure.
