Grischuk's Preparation Bears Fruit: He Almost Overslept, But Beat Caruana

The ongoing Sinquefield Cup is not proving very happy for the two newly-minted American representatives: Wesley So is bottom of the table, and Fabiano Caruana only has half a point more. In the previous round, Caruana beat Topalov, then there was a rest day, on which his next opponent, Alexander Grischuk, admits to rolling up his sleeves.

"In general, I spent about ten hours preparing", admitted Grischuk after the game. "Because of this, I almost overslept the start of the game. I didn't hear the alarm and woke up just in time, only about half an hour before the round started. But finally my preparation at last bore fruit. I'm sure my opponent had also analysed this line, but with the move 8.Rc1 (as Aronian played against Caruana in the first round  - CN)

GRISCHUK - CARUANA

Alexander pointed out that with the rook on c1, Black can take on e3 and attack it. Here, though, the picture is somewhat different.
17.0-0. It is hard to say what he had prepared after 17...fxe3! 18.Nxe4 (there is no other obvious attempt at refutation) 18...dxe4. Then, for example:
19.Qb3+ Kg7 20.Be5+ Kh6 (More principled is 20...Kg6!?) 21.fxe3 Qd5! 22.Qxd5 cxd5 23.Rxf8 Bxf8 24.Rf1 Bg7 25.Bxg7 Kxg7, and here only 26.с4! can even bring White equality;
19.fxe3 Be6 20.Rxf8+ Qxf8 21.Qxe4 Qf5 - again the attack is beaten off;
19.Qxe4? exf2+ 20.Kh1 Qe7 21.Bc4+ Kg7 22.Be5+? Kh6, and Black even wins.
The winner admitted that objectively, Black is OK, but if one has not prepared, then one can miss some nuance. As Caruana did.
17...b5? 18.Qb3 (Now he threatens to take on e4) 18...Qe7 19.Kh1 Be6 20.a4! d4 21.Qd1 d3 22.Bg4

This position Grischuk assessed as "completely winning" for White: "The point is that the black king is weaker than mine, and in addition, I have an extra piece". Caruana probably thought the same, and as a result again fell into desperate time trouble, and even failed to make his 40th move. However, at that point, he had no chance to save the game anyway.  1-0

In the other decisive game of the round, Vachier-Lagrave won with unexpected ease against Topalov. Playing Black, the Bulgarian decided to abandon his true and faithful Sicilian Defence in favour of the Berlin, but he did not succeed in equalising, and had to admit defeat on move 37.

The current leaders are Carlsen and Aronian, with Nakamura, Vachier-Lagrave and Giri half a point behind.
