The first game to finish in round 3 of the Sinquefield Cup was Anand-Topalov. After two losses, the Indian played with maximum accuracy, whilst the leader, with the black pieces, experienced no problems, but was unable to seize the initiative. Draw on move 31.

In the press room, Topalov admitted he was unsufficiently ambitious to think of trying to repeat Caruana's seven-game winning streak in St Louis last year. "No, no, a draw with Black is a good result", smiled the Bulgarian. "Especially in my situation".

In Veselin's words, it is not even wholly right to call him the leader. "The gaps from my chasers is too small. For example, if Magnus wins, which I hope he doesn't, he will be only half a point behind me and this difference means almost nothing". His hopes were not realised - Ed.
