Matches in Europe: Li Chao Knocks Out Leko, Mamedyarov Continues to Astonish Ragger in Ruy Lopez Exchange

Время публикации: 20.08.2015 07:27 | Последнее обновление: 20.08.2015 21:37

We have already reported on the two GM matches which are underway in Europe. Only one is still undecided - Shakhriyar Mamedyarov is leading 2.5 to 0.5 against Markus Ragger in Vienna, while Li Chao has already defeated Peter Leko in the Hungarian's home country. After winning the game 3, the guest won also the next game. Leko did his best to strike back in the 5th encounter, but extremely tenacious defence together with some luck saved half a point and won the match for Li Chao. The score is 3.5-1.5 in favour of the Chinese GM, but the sixth game will be played today anyway.

LEKO - LI CHAO (game 4)

Black has initiative for a pawn. Probably White had already to look for simplification and a draw, e.g. 31.Rg3 Qxf2 32.Qxf2 Rxf2 33.Ne4 Rh2 34.Rf3! and 35.Rf2=.
The greedy but natural 31.f3? proved to be wrong, as after 31...Bb5 32.c4 Be8 the position surprisingly turned out to be very difficult for White. Despite his extra pawn, he cannot untangle himself easily. Giving the pawn back didn't help Leko, and Black won on move 46:
33.Ka3 Bc6 34.Kb2 Qg7+ 35.Rc3 a5 36.Nb1 Qh8 37.a4 Be8 38.Na3 Kb6 39.Qg5 Bc6 40.Qf4 Rf2 41.Qc1 Rxf3 42.Nb1 Qf6 43.Qd2 Rh3 44.Qe2 Rh1 45.Nd2 Qd4 46.Qe3 Qg4

Black penetrates to the first rank. 0-1

LI CHAO - LEKO (game 5)

In mutual time trouble, Leko missed the simple 66...Nb1 where he would get a new queen, even if for the rook - 67.Re6+ Ka5 68.f8Q Rxf8 69.Nxf8 a1Q, etc. Instead, he played 66....Nc4+? which allowed his opponent to save the game in a miraculous way: 67.Kf2 Nxe5 68.fxe5 Rh8 69.Nf6 a1Q 70. Rxa1 Rxa1

71.e6! Better than 71.Nd7+ Kc6 72. f8Q Rxf8 73.Nxf8 g5 where Black probably wins. 72...Ra7 72.e7 Rxe7 73.Nd5+ Kc5 74.Nxe7 Rf8 75.Nxg6 Rxf7+ 76.Nf4 Kd4 77.Kg2, and White was in time to exchange the last pair of pawns. The game was drawn on move 97.

Meanwhile, Mamedyarov continues to astonish his opponent and his fans, as he has won already two games in the "harmless" Ruy Lopez Exchange.

MAMEDYAROV - RAGGER (game 3)

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Bxc6 dxc6 5.O-O f6 6.d4 exd4 7.e5!?

An amazing idea in a very well-known position! In the first game, Shakh chose 7.Nxd4 c5 8.Nb3. This move has been played only 4 times before and has never been seen at GM level. Ragger found a decent reaction but was outplayed afterwards.
7...Bg4 8.Re1 Ne7 9.exf6 gxf6 10.Nbd2 Qd5 11.Ne4 O-O-O 12.Nxf6 Bxf3 13.Nxd5 Bxd1 14.Nxe7+ Bxe7 15.Rxe7.

15...Rhe8?
The correct way was 15...Bxc2 16.Bf4 Rd7 17.Rxd7 Kxd7 18.Be5 Re8 19.Bxd4 Re2, or 18...Rg8!? 19.Bxd4 Be4! 20.g3 Bf3. Both lines are much better versions of what happened later in the game. Black should be okay, although the ending would remain tricky.
16.Rxe8 Rxe8 17.Be3! Bxc2 18.Bxd4 Rd8 19.Be3 Rd1+? (a clear mistake; after this wrong exchange, Black might be already lost) 20.Rxd1 Bxd1 21.f3 Kd7 22.Kf2 a5 23.g4 a4 24.a3 Ke6 25. Kg3. A typical situation for the exchange variation of Ruy Lopez - the white pawns are going forward, while Black's are neutralized easily. 1-0 on move 42.
Now Mamedyarov needs to get just a full point in the last 3 games in order to win the match. (Notes by GM Andrey Deviatkin)
