Riga, RTU Open: Alexei Shirov Wins as Black on-Demand and Takes First Prize

The 5th RTU Open has taken place in the capital of Latvia.

The main tournament was a 9-round Swiss with two doubled rounds (90+30 time control). According to the starting rank list, the main contenders for the first prize had to be two Latvian top chess players - Alexei Shirov and Igor Kovalenko, both rated 2702 in the FIDE list. However, Kovalenko, who had just entered the 2700 virtual club, had a very poor start - 1.5 out of 3.

NARVA - KOVALENKO (round 1)

Black's advantage was enormous just a couple of moves ago. Here too, White seems to be in dire straits, but...
36.Bd6+! (what?) 36...Bxd6 37.Qxd6+ Rxd6 38.Rxc8+ Kxc8 39.Re8+ Rd8 40.Rxd8+ Kxd8. That's what. Stalemate!

Then, after the loss in round 3, it took Kovalenko too long to come back to the top boards. Meanwhile, the Armenian GM Robert Hovhannisyan, who turned out to be in excellent chess shape, emerged the sole leader before the last round. Alexei Shirov stayed half a point behind.

On the final day, Hovhannisyan was paired with the winner of the previous RTU Open, his fellow countryman Hrant Melkumyan. Their game predictably ended in a calm draw, whereas Shirov didn't leave any chance to Israeil GM Tal Baron.

BARON - SHIROV (round 9)

The careless 22.Qd3-c4? was met by 22...Qh3! The mating attack is already unstoppable: 23.Qxc5 Ng4 24.Rfe1 Rfe8 25.Rxe8+ Rxe8 26.Be3 Nxh2 27.f3 Qxg3+ 28.Kh1 Nxf3 0-1

This trademark victory has brought Shirov 7.5 points and the first prize due to the tiebreak coefficient. Even so, the experienced GM was, in his commentary for Chess-News, quite sarcastic about his performance.

  • Anatoly Karpov's main place of work these days is an office at the State Duma, and nowadays people are as interested in his political opinions as in his views on chess. The match taking place in Riga against Evgeny Sveshnikov is one of few possibilities to see the twelfth world champion in the environment one has been used to seeing him in for decades.

  • Igor Kovalenko won the Najdorf Memorial and passed 2700

  • Two final games have been played today in the match between Alexei Shirov and Evgeny Sveshnikov in Riga. Once again, the more experienced GM failed in his opening specialties in the Sicilian Defence (Alapin variation as White and early 4...e5 as Black). Sveshnikov was close to equality in the first encounter of the day but his move 36 was a blunder which eliminated all hope to escape.
