The Second Front: Chinese Women Crush Russians in Ningbo

Время публикации: 19.07.2015 21:33 | Последнее обновление: 20.07.2015 01:22

On the fourth day of the friendly match in Ningbo the men's teams drew, but the Russian women suffered a major fiasco, losing 1-4. Now, with one round to go, China lead in both matches, 11.5-8.5 and 11-9.

FEDOSEEV - YU YANGYI

The Russian tried Kovalenko's recent idea 1. e4 c5 2. Be2!? Nc6 3.f4 - and soon had his opponent in trouble. After just ten moves, the latter made an inexplicable decision:

We have a complicated and undefined position, where Black has a wide choice of normal continuations: 10...Rb8 (the most natural), 10...Bd7, 10...Bb7, 10...a4 etc. Instead there followed 10...Ng4? 11. Bg1 e5?! 12.fxe5 (It is not clear what Yu was counting on, as after 12.h3 White also has the advantage - 12...Nf6 13.fxe5 Nh5 14.Qe1) 12...Ngxe5 13.Nxe5 Nxe5 14.d4 Nd7 15.Bxb5 Qc7 16.Nd2, and White had a healthy extra pawn, which he converted confidently.

Three other games in the men's match ended decisively and only Svidler against Lu Shanglei was drawn.

In the women's match, Tan Zhongyi beat Pogonina, Huang Qian - Kashlinskaya and Shen Yang - Goryachkina.

GORYACHKINA - SHEN YANG

In a Slav variation similar to the Exchange Variation, but with the black knight on e7 instead of f6, White was slightly better but the Chinese player defended well and equalised. Now it was time for Goryachkina to settle for 26.Qc2 Bh2+ 27.Kf1 Bd6 28.Bd3, and here, for example, 28...Rc8 29.Qb1 Rxc1+ 30.Qxc1 Bg6 31.Bxg6 Nxg6 32.Qc6 (or 32.b5) 32...Kf7 33.b5! Ne7 34.Qd7 Qe8 35.Qxe8 Kxe8 with equality.
UPD. 26.Qc2 Bh2+ 27.Kf1 might have seemed risky to White because of 27...b5!? 28.g3 Bxg3 29.fxg3 Qxg3, even though Black has probably nothing but equality after 30.Qc7. However, even the straightforward 26.Bb5 (with the same idea of pushing the b-pawn to b5 after exchanging the bishops) is a dozen times stronger than the move chosen by White.
After the obstinate 26.b5? we get an instructive example on the theme of shutting a piece out of the game: 26...Bh2+ 27.Kh1 Bd6 28.Qb3 Rd7 29.Rc3 Bg6 30.a4 Rc7 31.Kg1 Kf7 (Black has no reason to hurry) 32.Nf3 Rxc3 33.Bxc3 Qc7 34.Nd2 Bd3 35.Qb2

35...g5! The Ba6 is out of it, and the Chinese player opens a second front, in fully classical style. Strangely, in the previous round, another Russian had a knight out of the game. Clearly, the Chinese are excellent not just at tactics but strategically as well, always a mark of the world's elite.
36.Qb3 h5 37.a5 g4 38.axb6 axb6 39.hxg4 (More tenacious is 39.Bb2 Be2 40.Qc3, although White's position in the endgame is unenviable) 39...hxg4 40.Bb2 Bh2+ 41.Kh1 Be2 42.Nb1 Qb8 (The queen comes in to give mate).

43.Bc8 Sad consequences of the mistake at move 26.
43...Bd6 44.Qc2 Qxc8 45.Qh7+ Ke8, and Black soon won. 0-1

  • The first round of the Russia-China match has taken place in Ningbo.

  • The Chinese men's and women's teams confidently beat Russia at home in Ningbo. The gentlemen finished their match with a score of 14-11, the ladies - 15-10.

  • Both the men's and women's matches in round two of the Russia-China match ended in draws. In both cases, the two sides exchanged blows: in the women's event, young wife Alina Kashlinskaya won, but her friend and witness at her wedding, Valentina Gunina, lost; in the men's event, Fedoseev lost, but the Wei Yi - Svidler game ended in favour of the older star, who has been shining for already two decades.

  • The overall score after three rounds is 16-14 in favour of the hosts

  • In the latest round of the Russian Women's Superfinal, all six games ended decisively. The sole leader Alexandra Goryachkina lost to Anastasia Savina and has now been caught by Alexandra Kosteniuk, who outplayed Gunina, and by Ekaterina Lagno, who beat Pogonina. On the basis of the course of the games, all three results can be considered logical.

  • Some of today's matches in the women's world team championship ended in draws: India - China, Poland - USA, Russia - Armenia.

The failure of the Russians to win can be regarded as the biggest surprise. Girya beat Gaboian on board four, and there were draws between Mrktchian - Pogonina and Goryachkina - Galoian, but Valentina Gunina lost, just as she did yesterday.

  • The Russian women's team has beaten China again. They did so at the Tromso Olympiad, thanks to Ekaterina Lahno's victory over Hou Yifan, and now, in the world team championship, the girls easily coped without their leader, even two leaders, since Valentina Gunina did not play.

  • The ten-time winner of the Dortmund tournament, Vladimir Kramnik, started losing with White in the opening round to Arkady Naiditsch.

    KRAMNIK - NAIDITSCH

  • Alexandra Goryachkina leads the Russian women's Superfinal

  • Sergey Karjakin singlehandedly takes Russia to victory in unusual match with China
