Igor Kovalenko won the Najdorf Memorial and passed 2700

Today, the Miguel Najdorf Memorial finished in Warsaw. The event was a triumph for Igor Kovalenko: unusual openings, on which we reported earlier, became only a part of his triumphal parade. The Latvian approached the 9th and final round with 7.5 points, a whole point ahead of Ivan Cheparinov, and today he quickly gained the draw he needed against Michal Krasenkow. Among his highest rated opponents, Igor won as Black against Mista, Zhigalko and Efimenko.

  • In Dubai, we have seen the conclusion to the open tournament, made famous by the scandal of the expulsion of one competitor for cheating. Before the last round, a group of five Grandmasters was leading. Dragan Solak and Eltaj Safarli practically did not play their game at all, ending it with a draw at move 15, and then awaiting the results of their rivals.

  • In Nakhchivan, the final round of the Heydar Aliyev Open tournament has just finished. There were several candidates for victory right up to the last day, but all questions were answered by Gadir Guseinov beating Sergey Tiviakov, and Eltaj Safarli overcoming Pouya Idani. As a result, both Azeri grandmasters scored seven points, but Safarli won overall on tie-break.
