Dortmund: So's Knight Proves Stronger Than Kramnik's Pawns

Both the last round (and, indeed, the entire Dortmund tournament) was difficult for the Russian players: Kramnik and Nepomniatschi scored only half a point out of 2. It could have been worse, but it could also have been better.

At first, the ex-world champion had no problems in his favourite Berlin ending against Wesley So. On move 30, Kramnik sacrificed a piece for three pawns, a decision that was far from the only option. After his sacrifice, it turned out that, in a drawn position, Black needed to show great accuracy.

SO - KRAMNIK

55...a5 This is possible, but it was easier to hold with 55...Kb7! 56.Nxa6 c3.
56.Ra6+ Kb7 57.Rxa5 Kb6 58.Ra2 Maybe 58.Ra8 is more accurate, but So wanted to take the second rank. However, not everything is possible at once. Or is it?
58...Rd7? This move can only be explained by tiredness after yesterday's long and unsuccessful game. Of course, he should not let the enemy rook onto the eight rank: 58...Rd8! e.g. 59.g4 Kc5 60.Nc2 (или 60.Na6+ Kb6) 60...c3 with equality.
59.Ra8 Now Black is in trouble.
59...Kc5 The white pieces occupy ideal positions and various lines fail because of a lost rook ending. For example, 59...c3 60.Rc8 Ka5 61.Nc2 b4 62.Ra8+ Kb5 63.Rb8+ Kc4 64.Rxb4+ Kd3 65.Ne1+ Kd2 66.Kf2 с2 67.Nxc2.
60.Nc2

60...Rc7? The last chance was 60...Rf7+! Now the king can escape checks only on d2 and the game continues, albeit with excellent chances for White.
61.Rf8! Wesley sees the idea, defends against the checks. The rest of the game was fairly easy. 1-0

The game Hou Yifan - Nepomniatschi was on a high level. The Chinese, trying to escape shared last place, could have sent her opponent there, permanently posing him problems, but Yan did not slip.

HOU YIFAN - NEPOMNIATSCHI

49...e4! 50.fxe4 f3. Later, White could at various moments have fought for the win, with computer moves. But after the human move, and the Chinese player's perfectly logical decisions, the game is drawn.
51.Qg3+ Kh8 52.Bf5 Qc3 53.Kf2 Qd4+ 54.Kxf3 Rg8 55.Qe1 Qd3+ 56.Kf4 Qd6+ 57.Kf3 Qd3+ 58.Kf2 Qd4+ 59.Qe3 Qb2+ 60.Kf1 Qb1+ 61.Kf2 Qb2+ 62.Kf1 Qb1+ 63.Kf2 1/2

In the end, Kramnik took fourth place, half a point ahead of Nepomniatschi and Naiditsch. The main trophy was won in confident style by Caruana
