Back in November we reported on the idea of a rapid chess match between Evgeny Sveshnikov and Anatoly Karpov. The match did not take place at the originally-planned dates, but now all is ready for the two veterans to meet in the Latvian capital, Riga, from 7 to 9 July. They will play six games, with a time control of 25+10.

As Sveshnikov told our site, in view of the difficult political situation, the grandmasters have decided to play without flags on the table. The match will also not be rated, because FIDE has not provided any financial support to the organisers. "It will be simply a commercial, friendly match. We hope to attract some attention to chess", says Evgeny Sveshnikov.

The match will be at the Tal residence, which is opening just at the start of the match.
