Alexandria Kosteniuk wins the women's European Rapid Championship

Having arrived in Georgia solely for the rapid event, Alexandra Kosteniuk and Valentina Gunina were fresher than the rest of the field at the European Rapid Championship, and one round before the end, had assured themselves the top two places. The last round would only decide which of them would take which medal back to Russia. This dispute was decided by the two main heroines of the main European Women's Championship, Natalya Zhukova and Nino Batsiashvili. The first-named beat Kosteniuk, the second - Gunina.

In the final results, Batsiashvili and Zhukova occupied third and fourth places respectively, half a point behind the winner and Gunina.

The event took place in Kutaisi over 11 rounds, in three days. The quality of the games often suffered from the time control of 15+10. The assessment of positions changed fundamentally, including even in games involving the top players. In such circumstances, victory goes to the player who retains her calmness for longest.

A typical example was from the 9th round, in which the then two leaders Stefanova and Kosteniuk met. The Russian survived a lost position and then exploited her opponent's bad king position.

Black is ready to give mate, but must not forget about the two widely-spaced enemy passed pawns on the d- and h-files.

In recent years, Alexandra Kosteniuk has not shone in individual tournaments, saving her best results for team events. However, Alexandra has long been known as an especially strong player in rapid chess. In particular, in 2012 and 2014, she was runner-up in the world championships at this discipline. And now, the "chess queen", as she has styled herself since winning the world championship in 2008, again holds a crown. It is her first win in the European rapid Championship.
