Shamkir, Final Round Photo-report

You won't believe it, but Anand has already caught Carlsen. I saw it with my own eyes, and was even involved in the event.

I did not manage to photograph the exact moment, because at the time, I was sitting in Anand's car. But take my word for it: Carlsen as always, walked to the tournament hall, whilst Anand quitely drove with his whole team and the security people.

Today is Rauf Mamedov's birthday. Any grandmaster dreams of a game with Carlsen as a present.

A children's choir sang "Happy Birthday" to the Azeri, which Rauf and Shakhriyar enjoyed.

The future chess uncle Vladimir Tukmakov leads the youngsters on the right course.

If I played in Shamkir with such support as Anish, my thoughts would also not be on chess.

For whom is the game a holiday? We will find out soon. Meanwhile, Faik Gasanov's job is just to start the clocks and ensure the rules are followed.

The Azeri water would taste even sweeter if one were fighting for first place.

Others' positions are equally important.

If Magnus had nothing to say at the press conference, what can I add?..

Holiday spoiled.

Elmira and the others await the closing ceremony, but the battle for last place drags on.

Six hours' battle to avoid last place - that is motivation!

The commentators have their last breath. And the players?

Have you ever sympathised with girls for wearing high heels? These beautiful girls, seen in the photo above, went into the cafe and immediately took off their shoes, with cries of "Ooh!" and "Aah!". They were hurting. You see, gents, the lengths the girls go to to look good for you?

  • On the free day of the Shamkir tournament there is traditionally a football match. As last year, four teams were playing. In the semifinals, the chessplayers of Azerbaijan and the rest of the world, alas, lost to the teams of journalists and organisers/sponsors. But Magnus Carlsen played in the final as a guest for the organisers/sponsors' team, strengthening an already strong team. He was the outstanding player on the pitch.

  • Our special correspondent in Stavanger Dmitry Ostanin sent us some photos from the tournament.

My impressions of the first playing day in Sochi can be summed up in one sentence: great fuss about a single game of chess. It seems to me that's not the way it should be, ideally.

  • Our correspondent Marie Boyard visited Zug and concluded that the venue of third stage of the FIDE Grand Prix is almost ideal.

  • More photos from our correspondent Dmitry Ostanin from Stavanger.

  • Shamkir ready to hold two competitions dedicated to Vugar Gashimov's memory. The participants of the A group are Carlsen, Caruana, Nakamura, Karjakin, Mamedyarov and Radjabov.

Participants of B group are Wang Hao, Woijtaszek, Bacrot, Motylev, Eljanov, Mamedov, Safarli, Guseinov, Durarbeyli and Abbasov.

Today the players visited the graves of Vugar Gashimov and Heydar Aliyev (the national leader of Azerbaijan).

I have to admit once again that the idea of organizing various side events has been excellent. In the Sochi Media Center, one could never be bored.

  • When I started to prepare this report, I saw the appalling news from Moscow. It destroyed my wish to describe the closing ceremony of the third Grand Prix stage. I hope the readers will excuse me for this.

The pictures are expressive enough so that you will probably need no hints to get the impression of how the Tbilisi stage finished.
