"Better than FIDE"; all top players playing

A new series of tournaments, about which rumours have been circulating since the start of the year, has been officially announced. A press conference took place in St Louis this afternoon (evening GMT time), with the organisers of the series, which will go under the name Grand Chess Tour 2015 - Joran Aulin-Jansson, Rex Sinquefield and Malcolm Pein.

The series will consist of three tournaments:

Stavanger, 15-26 June
St Louis, 21 Aug - 3 Sept;
London, 3-14 December.

These super tournaments are not new - probably they could take place this year anyway. What's really new is the fact of their unification into the single series.

The cycle will include 9 permanent players, which each tournament organiser naming a tenth for his own event. However, only eight of the nine permanent players have been named:

1. Magnus CARLSEN
2. Fabiano CARUANA
3. Alexander GRISCHUK
4. Veselin TOPALOV
5. Viswanathan ANAND
6. Levon ARONIAN
7. Anish GIRI
8. Hikaru NAKAMURA

Vladimir Kramnik declined to take part. It is already known that the tenth player in the Stavanger event will be chosen on sporting principles, via a special qualification tournament.
UPD. The ninth participant is Maxime Vachier-Lagrave. He has confirmed that to our site today, on April 25th.

The prize fund for the series will be one million US dollars, with 300,000 for each tournament. All tournaments will be round robins.

FIDE has no role in the series. According to Aulin-Jansson, Garry Kasparov was the originator and consultant on the project.

Kasparov was asked what is the difference between the Grand Chess Tour and FIDE's well-known Grand Prix. "The new series is better", - the ex-world champion replied curtly, and drew attention to the line-up.
