Shamkir: Magnus Carlsen will play his football in the leader's jersey

In Shamkir, round five of the Gashimov Memorial has ended and has produced a change of leader: Wesley So lost to Vishy Anand, whilst Magnus Carlsen outplayed Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and has taken first spot in the tournament table.

The world champion's game turned into a kind of Fischerrandom affair - the Norwegian admitted he was making it up at the board from move four onwards. The key moment came on move 14:

CARLSEN - VACHIER-LAGRAVE

14...Nxd5? Vachier-Lagrave: "I thought for a long time, wondering why I should not take the pawn..." Carlsen: "I could overlook such a blow, of course, but not today." .
15.Bh6! gxh6 16.Qg4+ Bg5 17.cxd5 Kh8 18.h4 Bf6 19.Nce3, and White obtained a serious advantage, sufficient for Magnus to feel in his element and confidently convert it.

The game ended with a nice mate:

54.Bd5. There is no defence to Rf7+ and Rf5#, so Black resigned.

Not long before this, Vishy Anand had beaten Wesley So in lovely style. So: "It is very difficult to get out of the opening against Anand. But if you can manage it, then you can play against him,", said Anish Giri in his recent interview on our site. Wesley did not manage it, falling into the Indian's preparation.

ANAND - SO

Before today, this anti-Marshall position had only been seen once at top level, when there followed 9...Nb8 as played also by Wesley against Caruana in Wijk aan Zee in January. "I had looked at this game", admitted Anand. "I was interested in how easily Wesley equalised then."

There have been plenty of cases in Anand's career when he has improved on his opponent's games in the same tournament, so it is no surprise that he did so here after three months.
10.Ng5!?

A smile from So greets the daring knight jump

After some thought, the American replied perfectly logically, and probably in the way Anand expected:
10...Nc6 11.Ba2 Nd4 12.Ne2 Nxe2+ 13.Qxe2 h6 14.f4!? hxg5 We will probably have to wait to find out what Anand intended after 14...exf4 15.Nf3 g5.
15.fxg5 Ng4 After 15...Bg4 16.Qf2 Nh7 17.g6 White also has his plusses, although objectively, Black should not lose. Anand's main trump here is the line's surprise effect. It is never easy to defend accurately over the board, when you know your opponent has caught you in his preparation.
16.g6 Bg5?! Wesley played this quite quickly, but this haste was probably not good. It would be interesting to play immediately 16...Nh6!?, not fearing 17.Bxh6 gxh6 followed by the retreat of the king to  g7.
17.h3 Bxc1 18.Raxc1 Nh6 19.Qh5 Be6 20.Bxe6 fxe6 21.g4 The ex-world champion has the advantage, and realised it in a queen endgame.

After Kramnik's defeat, Anand moved into clear third place.

Tomorrow is a rest day. Carlsen can be guaranteed to take part in his beloved football game.
