Chengdu: Russia Crushes China, Zhukova Saves Ukraine From Defeat Against India

Время публикации: 21.04.2015 21:40 | Последнее обновление: 21.04.2015 21:54

The Russian women's team has beaten China again. They did so at the Tromso Olympiad, thanks to Ekaterina Lahno's victory over Hou Yifan, and now, in the world team championship, the girls easily coped without their leader, even two leaders, since Valentina Gunina did not play.

However, the Chinese were also not at full strength - in Chengdu, they are without Hou Yifan and Zhao Xue. Ju Wenjun has not coped very well on top board so far, scoring just half out of three. Today, she was outplayed fairly easily by Alexandra Kosteniuk, whilst on board four, Olga Girya won equally convincingly against Lei Tingjie. Alexandra Goryachkina drew with Shen Yang, and Natalia Pogonina was unable to realise an extra pawn in a rook and opposite-coloured bishop endgame. The final score was therefore 3-1.

The Ukrainian team had a dramatic match against India. On the top boards, the two Muzychuk sisters and Humpy and Harika were in a peaceful mood, but this was in the Indians' favour, as Anna Ushenina committed a terrible blunder just before the time control:

USHENINA - PADMINI

39.Nd4?? Bxd4 40.exd4 f4 41.f3 Nc3 (or 41.Bxf4 Nc3 followed by 41...Ne2+) 42.Rxb6 Ne2+ 43.Kf1 fxg3 44.hxg3 Nxg3+ etc. 0-1

The reigning world champions were saved from defeat by Natalia Zhukova, who exploited her opponent's mistake on the same 39th move.

After three rounds, Georgia are leading, after today beating Poland 2.5-1.5. Russia and USA are a point behind.

  • Some of today's matches in the women's world team championship ended in draws: India - China, Poland - USA, Russia - Armenia.

The failure of the Russians to win can be regarded as the biggest surprise. Girya beat Gaboian on board four, and there were draws between Mrktchian - Pogonina and Goryachkina - Galoian, but Valentina Gunina lost, just as she did yesterday.

  • A few minutes ago in Chengdu, the eighth and penultimate round of the womens' world team championship ended. Two teams are fighting for victory in the event - Russia and Georgia. Today the Georgians defeated Armenia 3-1, whilst Russia overcame Ukraine 2.5-1.5. The latter key match was clinched by Natalia Pogonina and Olga Girya, who won on boards three and four. The Muzychuk sisters tried to save their team, but only Anna managed to score the full point.

  • A few minutes ago in Chengdu, the seventh round of the women's world team championship ended. The leaders Georgia beat India 2.5-1.5, whilst Russia drew with Kazakhstan.

It must be admitted that the results could have been worse for both, especially Russia: Gulmira Dauletova was unable to convert to a full point a completely winning position against Alexandra Goryachkina.

  • Georgia and Russia sign peace

  • "The golden girls" are not confined to Russia

  • The first round of the Russia-China match has taken place in Ningbo.

  • The Chinese men's and women's teams confidently beat Russia at home in Ningbo. The gentlemen finished their match with a score of 14-11, the ladies - 15-10.

  • The victorious row of the Georgian women's team had lately equaled to eighteen matches. The first eight wins were collected during the World Team Championship, other seven were gained just recently in Skopje, where the Georgian club Nona was represented by almost all the national team players.

  • Both the men's and women's matches in round two of the Russia-China match ended in draws. In both cases, the two sides exchanged blows: in the women's event, young wife Alina Kashlinskaya won, but her friend and witness at her wedding, Valentina Gunina, lost; in the men's event, Fedoseev lost, but the Wei Yi - Svidler game ended in favour of the older star, who has been shining for already two decades.

  • First classical games of the 4th round are over in FIDE Women's knockout taking place in Krasnaya Polyana near the Russian city of Sochi. Humpy Koneru's long winning streak (6 victories in succession) has been finally interrupted by Mariya Muzychuk: the rating favorite underestimated White's attacking resources and missed a beautiful combination.
