Shamkir: Novelty Does Not Bring Caruana Victory Over Giri

In the fifth round of the Shamkir tournament, Fabiano Caruana played White against Anish Giri and obtained real chances to record his first win.

Theoreticians pointed to his novelty in a variation of the Catalan:

13.Qa2!? Previously, only 13.axb6 had been played here. Anish did not react in the best possible way - 13...Nb8, and up to a certain moment, according to Caruana's trainer Vladimir Chuchelov, the Italian played very strongly. And just when almost all the work was done, Fabiano committed an inaccuracy:

23.Bc7?! instead of 23.Be3!. His next move aggravated the offence: 23...Qc8 24.Bd6? He could maintain the advantage with 24.Qb3!
Giri then demonstrated miraculous defence: 24...Bxd6 25.Nxd6 Qd8 26.Ne4 Rc7 27.Nxf6+ gxf6 28.Qa1 Re8!, and it transpired that Black was holding. 1/2 on move 44.

In Chuchelov's words, the draw was a fair result for both players. Full interview to follow soon on our site.
