Wesley So Leads in Shamkir: "I have Forgotten About the Past and Moved On"

For the first time, the tournament in Shamkir has an outright leader - not the player we are using to seeing in the top spot, but Wesley So. The draw gave the American three Whites in his first four games, and he has won all three.

Today Rauf Mamedov was dispatched. Interestingly, So's opinion on where Black went wrong does not concur with the computer's.

SO - MAMEDOV

At the press conference, So confidently asserted that his opponent went wrong with 22...Rcxd8 - "he should have taken with the other rook". But the computer shows that 22...Rfxd8 is at least not better. The point is that White then plays not So's indicated 23.Bxg7, but 23.bxc6! Nxc3 24.cxb7 Nxe2+ 25.Kg2 Rb8 26.Bxb8 Rxb8, and here 27.Rad1 Nd4 28.Rb1 retains the advantage for White. Consequently, the reason for Black's defeat must be sought earlier, in the opening stage.

"Did you expect to be leading the tournament?" - Wesley was asked. "Of course not", - he shook his head. "Especially as we have only crossed the Equator, and half the tournament lies ahead. Anything can happen. It is still fresh in my memory how Magnus won six games in a row at Wijk aan Zee this year."

The GM again emphasised that the scandal at the US championship had given him extra motivation. "I decided to forget the pass and move on. I have identified various chess weaknesses and I work every day on these, analysing games. It is also very important to fight in every game, concentrate attention only on the game and do not think about what people are saying about you."

Carlsen played Black against Adams as though he was White and already after the opening, he was pressing for an advantage. But in the search for unusual decisions, the Norwegian used a lot of time, and decide not to take any risks in time trouble. "Considering I have had three Blacks out of four, I am more than satisfied with my current position", the world champion summed up. At this moment, he is clear second, half a point behind the leader.
