Аnish Giri: "Wesley So Did Write Something on His Scoresheet But That's Not Why I Lost."

One of the two decisive games in the opening round of the Gashimov Memorial saw the duel between Wesley So and Anish Giri. It was one of those rare cases where two elite grandmasters played the opening virtually without theory. Admittedly this did not help the Dutchman, playing Black - as early as move 12 he fell into a difficult position. One cannot regard as successful the bishop transfer d6-f8-g7. Wesley neatly exploited this loss of time and, as Giri later admitted, realised his advantage accurately.

This was Wesley's third win in a row since the scandal at the US Championship. After being defaulted for taking notes against Akobian, Wesley won his last two games at the US Championship and his first game here at Shamkir.

Coincidence? The grandmaster himself answered this question: "After that business, I was criticised by various people, including for my poor performance in the tournament. Now my only answer is to fight in every game. Hit back at those who mean you ill. In every game you have to show what you are capable of. But even so, one shouldn't overestimate the importance of this mini-series, because in St Louis I also won the first two games but then lost several".

In his turn, Giri admitted he was watching his opponent's behaviour to see if he would make any extraneous notes. "To be honest, he did write something, but this did not affect my play", smiled Giri. "I lost for lots of other reasons."
