WWCC: Mariya Muzychuk is in the semifinals, but the final match won't be purely Ukrainian

Both of the play-off games of the quarterfinal match between Humpy Koneru and Mariya Muzychuk went favourably for the rating favorite. In the first encounter, Koneru was close to winning but missed her chances. The second game saw even greater advantage for the Indian player. But...

KONERU - M.MUZYCHUK

Mariya is famous for her ability to find unexpected tactical tricks, which sometimes recompenses for some flaws in her positional understanding. On the contrary, Koneru's chess style is clearly positional.
The white bishop had just jumped from g4 to d7 taking the black rook, but, instead of the prosaic recapture (which would probably have led to the easy victory for Koneru), Black suddenly played 32...Re3!?
33.b3. While short of time, it's very difficult either to see or to make up one's mind for 33.h4! which is the most precise way to win, for instance: 33...Qe5 34.Bh3! Rxa3 35.d7 Qe3+ 36.Kh2 Nxd7 37.Rxd7 h6 38.bxa3. If 33...Qh6 then White has another option of sacrificing the queen victoriously: 34.Bxb6! Rxa3 35.Bxc5 Rg3 36.Bh3, and Black has no hope (36...Rxh3 37.d7).
33...Rd3! Yet another surprise. The move deserves an exclamation mark for its resoursefulness, even though objectively the position remains winning for White.
34.Re1. The immediate 34.Qc1, bringing the queen into the game, is better.
34...Re3. And now, instead of 35.Rf1, White plays 35.Qc1??, and it's Muzychuk not Koneru who advances to the semifinals - 35...Nd3!
36.Bd8 Rxe1+ 37.Qxe1 Qc5+ 38.Kf1 Nxe1 39.Kxe1 Qc1+ 40.Ke2 Ba6+ 41.Ke3 Qe1+. 0-1

Another tiebreak match saw Mariya's sister, Anna Muzychuk, facing Pia Cramling, an ultra-experienced Swedish player.

The Ukrainian could have taken control on the match situation only in the first rapid game, when she got a serious advantage in the Taimanov Sicilian. However, Muzychuk slowed down at some point, and Cramling found an excellent practical solution, as she liquidated into an ending at the cost of a pawn. When all Black's pieces suddenly became very active, Muzychuk got confounded and lost the game.

Even though Anna managed to take the revenge in the second rapid fight by luring Cramling into sharp play uncomfortable both for her style and the match situation, two next games (10'+10") went at the bidding of the more experienced player. The Swedish GM confidently won with White and forced a draw in a winning position with Black.

Thus, Pia Cramling, who will celebrate her 52nd birthday on April 23rd, will face Natalija Pogonina in the semifinal. The Russian WGM has just knocked out the last Chinese player from the championship. In the other semifinal match, Mariya Muzychuk will fight Harika Dronavalli, who had defeated Meri Arabidze in the regular games earlier (1.5 to 0.5).
