World Women's Championship: Gunina & Koneru Qualify to Round 3 Perfectly Undamaged

Время публикации: 22.03.2015 04:44 | Последнее обновление: 22.03.2015 16:12

Five days of chess battles are over in the Women's World Championship in Krasnaya Polyana; at least fifteen more days remain. While the 2nd round is still under way, four matches of round 3 (1/8 finals) are already clear:

Koneru - Gallyamova
Cmilyte - Arabidze
A.Muzychuk - Javakhishvili
Gunina - Cramling

Five matches of round 2 will be decided on tiebreaks:

M.Muzychuk - Socko
Stefanova - Gaponenko
Harika - Krush
Ushenina - Sebag
Khotenashvili - Huang Qian

Among 11 players who have made their way into the 1/8 finals, two participants managed not to lose even half-a-point - the top seed, Humpy Koneru, and the Russian women's champion, Valentina Gunina, have won all their classical games. Yesterday Gunina knocked out another member of the Russian Olympic team, Olga Girya. While Valentina's victory in the second game with Black was rather convincing, the first encounter went a bit fortunately for her. In a safe and pleasant position, Girya, who was also much better on time, suddenly relaxed her vigilance and allowed a series of blows.

GUNINA - GIRYA (round 2, game 1)

25...h5 26.gxh5 Rxh5. It's rather Black who is on the attacking side, but one should always be on the alert while facing such a dangerous tactician as Gunina.
27.Nf4 Rhc5. The solid 27...Re5! followed by the prophylactic 28...Kg7 would have probably been more unpleasant for the Russian champion who was in time trouble.
28.Nxg6!? fxg6 29.Rd6! Bxd6? This automatic capture is already the decisive mistake. As a rule, the best way of defence, while the king is under attack, is to suppress emotions and reflexes, starting to search for moves which don't lose at once by pure calculation. That's what Black should have done here: after the calm 29...Qc7 30.Qxe6+ (or 30.Rxe6?! Kf8) 30...Kf8 there is no mate. White doesn't have anything better than 31.Rxa6 (31.Rd7? Nxd7 32.Rxd7 Qe5 33.Rxe7 Rc1+ 34.Bf1 Qg5+) 31...Re5, where the compensation could be enough only for equality.
30.Qxe6+ Kh7 31.Rxd6.

31...Rc1+? Another impulsive move loses on the spot. The most tenacious is 31...Qc7 32.Qxf6 Qg7, since the c5-rook participates in defence, ready to go to h5 in case of 33.Qh4+ and also protecting the d5-square. Yet, after 33.Qe6 Black's position is hardly holdable.
32.Kh2 Qc7 33.Qxf6 Rc2. The pin doesn't help Black at the slightest. The rest is agony; the lines 33...Qg7 34.Qh4+ Kg8 35.Bd5+, or 33...Rg8 34.Bd5 Rg7 35.Qh4# are convincing enough.
34.Qxg6+ Kh8 35.Qh5+ Kg8 36.Bd5+ Kg7 37.Qh6# 1-0
(Annotated by GM Andrey Deviatkin)

  • First classical games of the 4th round are over in FIDE Women's knockout taking place in Krasnaya Polyana near the Russian city of Sochi. Humpy Koneru's long winning streak (6 victories in succession) has been finally interrupted by Mariya Muzychuk: the rating favorite underestimated White's attacking resources and missed a beautiful combination.

  • Some of today's matches in the women's world team championship ended in draws: India - China, Poland - USA, Russia - Armenia.

The failure of the Russians to win can be regarded as the biggest surprise. Girya beat Gaboian on board four, and there were draws between Mrktchian - Pogonina and Goryachkina - Galoian, but Valentina Gunina lost, just as she did yesterday.

  • The first round of the Russia-China match has taken place in Ningbo.

  • A few minutes ago in Chengdu, the eighth and penultimate round of the womens' world team championship ended. Two teams are fighting for victory in the event - Russia and Georgia. Today the Georgians defeated Armenia 3-1, whilst Russia overcame Ukraine 2.5-1.5. The latter key match was clinched by Natalia Pogonina and Olga Girya, who won on boards three and four. The Muzychuk sisters tried to save their team, but only Anna managed to score the full point.

  • Both the men's and women's matches in round two of the Russia-China match ended in draws. In both cases, the two sides exchanged blows: in the women's event, young wife Alina Kashlinskaya won, but her friend and witness at her wedding, Valentina Gunina, lost; in the men's event, Fedoseev lost, but the Wei Yi - Svidler game ended in favour of the older star, who has been shining for already two decades.

  • The Chinese men's and women's teams confidently beat Russia at home in Ningbo. The gentlemen finished their match with a score of 14-11, the ladies - 15-10.

  • In the latest round of the Russian Women's Superfinal, all six games ended decisively. The sole leader Alexandra Goryachkina lost to Anastasia Savina and has now been caught by Alexandra Kosteniuk, who outplayed Gunina, and by Ekaterina Lagno, who beat Pogonina. On the basis of the course of the games, all three results can be considered logical.

  • A few minutes ago in Chengdu, the seventh round of the women's world team championship ended. The leaders Georgia beat India 2.5-1.5, whilst Russia drew with Kazakhstan.

It must be admitted that the results could have been worse for both, especially Russia: Gulmira Dauletova was unable to convert to a full point a completely winning position against Alexandra Goryachkina.

  • The Russian women's team has beaten China again. They did so at the Tromso Olympiad, thanks to Ekaterina Lahno's victory over Hou Yifan, and now, in the world team championship, the girls easily coped without their leader, even two leaders, since Valentina Gunina did not play.

  • Natalija Pogonina has convincingly outplayed Zhao Xue in the rapid games of the round 4 play-off, advancing to the semifinals of the Women's World Championship.
