A new sole leader in Jerusalem: Evgeniy Najer has 8 out of 10 before the final day

Today, before the final round, the participants of the European Championship are having the second day-off. This unusual situation is related to the Jewish religious tradition of Shabbat which is observed strictly in Israel. Due to the same circumstances, the yesterday's round began as early as at 11:00 local time (as well as the 4th round a week ago). This has somehow been for the benefit of the Russian grandmaster Evgeniy Najer who has won his sixth game in the championship, while his opponent, Anton Korobov, played a bit like he hadn't woken up yet, finding himself in trouble after some 20 moves.

Evgeniy has been a bit lucky, having got the white pieces for the second time in a row, while Korobov has suddenly opted for the rare Rubinstein variation of the Sicilian: 1.е4 с5 2.Nf3 Nf6. 'I'm not sure Anton has never played this line before, but I'm sure he didn't try it for the last 5 years', Najer said after the game. The development of the game has clearly demonstrated that Black's opening experiment was far from  fortunate. Why did Korobov choose the Rubinstein variation, then? The winner has only one guess: "Anton is a good friend of Denis Khismatullin, and the latter had beaten me once with Black after this opening in about 30 moves. However, I think Denis had played 4...e6 instead of 4...Nхc3'.

According to Najer, Black had to prefer 9...a6 over 9...Bb7 (a move before, he rejected immediate 8.0-0-0 is favor of 8.Bg3 due to the same reason of 8...a6!). After 9...Bb7 and 10...0-0-0, White got a very comfortable position. 'Black has no counterplay. Absolutely!', was Evgeniy's comment to the position already after 12.Rhd1, while after 18...f5?! Najer had started to realise that White's advantage was already big.

NAJER - KOROBOV

White's 21.Rd3!, clearing the d2-square for the knight, was a strong and subtle decision. 'After the game, Anton criticized himself for 21...е5, but I don't know what Black should have played instead', Najer said. The rest of the game has been played by the Russian grandmaster convincingly enough, even though not perfectly.

Thus, the Russian GM gained a very important point, becoming the sole leader with one round before the finish with 8 points. David Navara equalized gradually with Black and drew Sanan Sjugirov on the adjacent board, while Denis Khismatullin, who has been already mentioned above, managed to find an amazing idea in the heavy-pieces endgame vs Pavel Eljanov.

KHISMATULLIN - ELJANOV

42.Qh8! Qc2? (tempting but wrong; Black had to play 42...Rxc6=) 43.Qf8+ Kg5 44.Kg1!! Qxd1+ 45.Kh2 Rxc6 46.Qe7+ Kh6 47.Qf8+ Kg5 48.Qxf7!

The point. It's hard to believe that Black is helpless despite the extra rook and a very small number of pieces remained, but it is so.
48...Rf6 (48...Kh6 49.Qf8+ Kg5 [49...Kh5 50.g4+ Kg5 51.f4+ Kh4 52.Qh6#) 50.Qf4+ Kh5 51.g4+ Kh4 52.Qh6#; 48...Rc5 49.Qf4+! (49.f4+ Kh6 50.Qf8+ Kh5 51.g4+ Qxg4 52.hxg4 Kxg4 is less clear) 49...Kh5 50.g3! (50.g4+? Kh4 51.Qh6+ Rh5=) 50...g5 51.Qf7+ Kh6 52.Qf6+ Kh5 53.g4+ Qxg4 54.Qf7+ Kh4 55.hxg4 winning) 49.f4+ Kh6 (49...Kf5 50.Qd5#) 50.Qxf6 Qe2 51.Qf8+ Kh5 52.Qg7 h6 53.Qe5+ Kh4 54.Qf6+ Kh5 55.f5 gxf5 56.Qxf5+ Kh4 57.Qg6, and Black resigned due to the coming mate. 1-0

Navara and Khismatullin are the nearest Najer's rivals with 7.5 points each; the 7-points group consists of 15 players.

The 11th round will begin at 11:00 GMT (13:00 local time). It remains to be seen who will benefit from the rest day and yet another change of the beginning time.
