Tbilisi: Tomashevsky Becomes Hero of The Start (ANNOTATED GAMES)

Время публикации: 19.02.2015 02:41 | Последнее обновление: 19.02.2015 11:47

The 3rd stage of the FIDE Grand Prix 2014/15 series, which is taking place in Tbilisi, has got one of the most surprising leaders possible. Of course, Russian GM Evgeny Tomashevsky (2716) is a well-known and already confirmed 2700 player, but, given the line-up he is facing in Tbilisi, probably a very few people expected him to be a full point ahead of his nearest rivals with 3.5 out of 4 before the first day-off. However, let's remember that no one else than Dmitry Andreikin, who is also from Russia, had become the dark horse in Tashkent, taking clear first quite unexpectedly. By coincidence, Andreikin and Tomashevsky were living in the same Russian city of Saratov for a long time, where they were studying in the same university! (Now Dmitry lives in Ryazan, his home city, again).

Evgeny Tomashevsky

Having started with the victory against Baadur Jobava, Tomashevsky confidently held his compartiot Dmitry Jakovenko to a draw with Black. Then he scored two victories in a row, defeating Alexander Grischuk (2810) and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (2759).

TOMASHEVSKY - GRISCHUK (round 3)

Tomashevsky, whose chess style is generally positional, has got the reputation as an excellent player against the King's Indian. In the game against the favorite, he has confirmed it once again:
20.Rxa6! A very nice positional exchange sacrifice. 20...bxa6 (20...cxd5 doesn't work due to 21.Rxd6 d4 22.c5 dxc3 23.Nb1) 21.dxc6 Nb6 22.Qa1. 22.b5!? was more natural, hammering a nail in the c6-square, but the position after 22...axb5 23.cxb5 Be6 isn't totally clear since Black intends to open up the center by d6-d5.
22...Qc7 23.c5 dxc5 24.bxc5 Na8 25.Qa4 Qa7 26.Nc4? 26.Nd5! was much better, with the following tactical justification: 26... Be6? 27.c7! Nxc7 28.c6.
26...Be6 27.Bd3 Rfd8 28.Ke2 Nc7? Missing a chance in time-trouble: 28...Rd4! After 29.Bxd4 exd4, Black also takes on c5 getting very good counterplay. Now White's domination decides the outcome.
29.Nb6 Bf6 30.Bc4 Bxc4+ 31.Qxc4 Ne6 32.Ncd5 Bg7 33.Rf3
.

A picturesque position. White knights dominate over the whole board. The convertion didn't take a long time: 33...Re8 (it's hard to suggest a reasonable alternative) 34.c7! Rb7 35.c8=Q Rxc8 36.Nxc8 Rb2+ 37.Kf1. 1-0

MAMEDYAROV - TOMASHEVSKY (round 4)

The Azeri GM chose a calm variation of the Chebanenko Slav, where Carlsen had defeated Nakamura (Shamkir 2014). It seems Tomashevsky's response was more subtle than Hikaru's. For instance, Black managed to exchange a pair of knights which is generally in his favour since his position is slightly cramped. Now Evgeny also makes an instructive positional move.
20...b5! 21.axb5 cxb5 22.c5. The naive 22.cxb5 cxb5 23.Qxb5 Qxb5 24.axb5 Reb8 25.Ra1 Rxb5 26.Ra3 Rab8 27.Rxa5 Rxa5 28.Bxa5 Rxb3 29.Re1 Nd6 shows the potential dangers for White - despite the symmetrical pawn structure, Black is clearly better due to superiority of his knight over the white bishop. After the text move, Stockfish strangely persists in promising White better chances, but the annotator would perhaps have picked Black who creates a nice blockade. The bishop, in spite of its beautiful outpost on d6, is worse than the knight in the long term. However, White has powerful c5-pawn as the compensation. The evaluation is around equal.
22...b4 23.Be1 Nd8 24.Bg3 Nc6 25.Bd6. Probably Mamedyarov rejected 25.Ra1 because it allows 25...e5 (which is actually interesting but not totally necessary - if Black sits and waits White doesn't have a clear plan of improvement), or maybe he thought the opening of the queenside would be in his favour, but the things turn out to be not that simple.
25...a4 26.bxa4 Rxa4 27.e4 Ra3 28.Qb5 Rea8 29.Rfe1 R8a7 (the pawn is ready to be pushed further after 30...Rb7) 30.f4.

30...f5! Necessary (Black cannot allow f4-f5) but also instructive.
31.exf5 exf5. Now both sides has to be accurate. Just imagine that White wins the d5-pawn somehow, and what the Black's position will become after that? Or, on the contrary, imagine Black has exchanged the queens, and the pawn goes forward almost automatically. The impression is, however, that it's White who has to be more careful, even if his activity is sufficient for equality.
32.h3 Kh7 33.Kh2 Rb7 34.Qe2 Qf7 35.Rd3 Qg6 36.Red1 Rba7 37.Be5 Na5 (37...b3? 38.Qf3 is what we were talking about) 38.Qe1 Qa6 39.Rxa3 bxa3 40.Bd6 Qc8. The king must not be left unattended. Now a horrible blunder by Mamedyarov follows. The annotator's best guess is that he thought he was in severe time trouble (let us remind you that there is no increment in the Grand Prix tournaments till move 61) and didn't realise the move 40 had been made.

41.Rb1?? White's position is already dangerous, but the machine says the passed pawn is easily stopped by 41.Qc3, 41.Qg3, or even 41.Be5. Black cannot bring all his forces to support it as his king is potentially unsecure, and also one shouldn't forget about the c-pawn (which is used as a deflection in many lines).
41...a2 42.Rb8 Qd7. Game over. The threat is 43...Nc6, while if 43.Qa1 then simply 43...Qa4 and 44...Nb3. White did played 43.Qa1 and resigned. 0-1

Anish Giri, Alexander Grischuk, and Dmitry Jakovenko are tied for the 2nd place with 2.5 points each.

So far, the tournament isn't too successful for Grischuk and Jobava (especially for the latter), but both are in good spirits.
Grischuk won
.

The following victory in the starting round allowed Giri to cross the 2800 mark in the live ratings:

SVIDLER - GIRI (round 1)

The position appears to be completely equal, but in fact the turn to move makes the difference:
17...Nd4! 18.Nxd4 exd4 19.Bxd4 Nxe4. While the symmetry has been kept, the initiative already belongs to Black whose bishops are very powerful. If 20.Rad1 then 20...Qg5 is unpleasant (20...Qh4!? is also tempting), for example: 21.Be3 (21.Bf3?? Qf4) 21...Qe5 22.f4 Qf6 with advantage. Svidler found an interesting defensive concept based on mass simplifications at the cost of weakening his kingside. It has nearly worked:
20.Bf3 Rc8 21.Rfe1 Nxc3 22.Rxe8+ Qxe8 23.Bxc3 Bxf3 24.gxf3 Qe6 25.Rd1! Rc5 26.h4! Rc4 27.Qd3 Bf8 28.Qd8 Qf5.

29. Qa8?? Time-trouble with no increment! Some of the readers probably remember that the time control used in the Grand Prix series had already been condemned by the participants during the Baku stage. While there might be nothing wrong with the absence of increment in general (after all, such time control had been used for ages before the American genius invented his chess clock), switching between completely different types of time control is an extremely hard task. Besides, the question is: what's the point of rejecting the habitual pattern exactly in the Grand Prix? Is there any reason at all?
After the obvious (at least for Svidler) 29.Rd4! White should be able to hold: 29...Rc8 30.Qd7 Qxd7 31.Rxd7 h5 with only slight edge (if any) for Black in the endgame, or 29...Rxd4 30.Qxd4! (better than 30.Bxd4 Qg6+! 31.Kf1 Qd6) 30...Qxf3 31.Qd8!, and White draws due to the threat of 32.Bb4. Black can give a lot of checks which bring no more than a perpetual though.

29...Rxh4. So simple. Now 30.Rd8 fails to 30...Qb1+ (maybe this long queen move was missed by Svidler?), while if 30.Bb4 then 30...Qg5+! (not 30...Qg6+? 31.Kf1 Rh1+ 32.Ke2 Qe6+ 33.Kd2 Qd7+ 34.Ke3! and it's a draw all of a sudden) 31.Kf1 Rh1+ 32.Ke2 Qe5+ winning. 0-1 (Games annotated by GM Andrey Deviatkin)

Anish Giri didn't know yet that he would cross 2800

The battles of the first four rounds can be replayed below. The 5th round will be played on February 20th (11:00 GMT).
