The 3rd round of the B-tournament in Wijk aan Zee saw an event which couldn't go unnoticed, for the Dutch audience especially: the national female champion Anne Haast has beaten Jan Timman with Black. According to her, Timman is the best player she has defeated so far.

'In the opening he offered me a pawn (it's normal for this opening), and after that he refused to take it back. Had he done so the position would've been quite drawish, but he wanted more and went for the attack', 21 years old Haast said at the press conference. 'Instead, my pawn became very strong, and it was me who attacked his king with my knights and queen. When I saw 26...Nxf2! I thought the position had to be winning'.

The most interesting about this game is, however, not its chess contents, but the preceding events. That morning, Anne had to attend her studies in Tilburg. The rounds start at 13:30 local time, and she couldn't miss the studies, so she had no choice but to prepare for the game in a car: 'I couldn't avoid it, so I had to make the best of it, and it worked'.
