He's got 'a coward' at the start

Will Carlsen win Wijk aan Zee for the 4th time? Or Aronian is going to achieve his 5th triumph? Or, maybe, it's time for Caruana or Giri to conquer the Dutch throne for the first time? Are Radjabov or Ivanchuk able to remember that they've also been victorious here, even though they aren't considered the favorites anymore?

In a little more than 2 weeks, we'll get the answers to all those questions. So far, the drawing of lots has been conducted in the building belonging to Tata Steel. According to Carlsen's Twitter, he has got 'the worst possible start': the world champion will begin the tournament with Black against Giri, while he'll also have the black pieces in the 3rd and 4th rounds. Moreover, Magnus, in his interview for a Norway TV channel, has called (even if with the grin on his face) his first opponent 'a coward', according to the translation by Norwegian journalist Tarjei Svensen: 'If he sees that he gets nothing out of the opening, he will play for a draw'.

In another interview - to the Tata Steel Chess festival organizers - Magnus has admitted that it will be 'very tough' to win: 'Fabiano is extremely good. Also Levon Aronian is always doing well here, he feels refreshed because he always has the vacation before the tournament'. Carlsen added that he himself had tried to do the same: 'I've had a bit of a vacation after the world championship, and I'm feeling refreshed and ready to go. I've mostly been relaxing, but I've been in touch with my second Peter-Heine Nielsen... he's probably been working more than I have been'.

The photo report from the opening ceremony by Evgeny Surov will be published later.
