3 rounds are over in the Australian Open which is under way in the suburb of Sydney. So far, 6 players have got the perfect score: Ni Hua, Murtas Kazhgaleyev, Eugene Schon, Steven Yap Kim, Gregory Canfell, and the incumbent Australian champion Max Illingworth. A group of 12 players including 5 GMs have 2.5/3 (see complete current standings). There are 8 more rounds to go.

Australian chess hope Anton Smirnov had started from 2/2 but was outplayed by Canfell in round 3.

Chinese GM Ma Qun, who has lost a remarkable miniature in Groningen recently, in fact seems not to be present in Sydney despite being currently listed at the official website as the participant.

The Australian blitz championship is scheduled for January 6th which is the rest day of the classical event.

Selected games from the first 3 rounds of the Australian Open can be viewed below.
