"This Is Certainly the Greatest Success in My Career"

27-years old Igor Lysyj from Yekaterinburg is the new Russian Champion

The Men's Russian Championship 2014 has come to an end today. In the final round, the draw with Black against Boris Grachev proved sufficient for Igor Lysyj to secure the title, as none of his rivals has managed to win on-demand. Ian Nepomniachtchi was convincingly outplayed (despite being White) in the sharp variation of the French Defence by Nikita Vitiugov. Dmitry Jakovenko was Black against Denis Khismatullin and drew, also in a sharp fight; at some point, Dmitry's position seemed to be better, but Khismatullin defended well.

Igor Lysyj (2686) had grabbed the lead in round 5, reinforced it in round 6 and then maintained it to the end. However, his final draw wasn't as easy at it might seem at first glance.

In the video relay on the official website, right after the game, Igor Lysyj commented on the game: 'The opening had been analysed at home towards the queen's ending. I thought it was an easy draw but then I probably went the wrong way. Up to his 28.Qa6, I was playing well, but my plan of  f7-f5 and e6-e5 is erroneous. I thought that the draw would be secured by the f5-f4 breakthrough and then some perpetuals, but it appeared that Grachev missed his chance at the end".

This is the critical position he was talking about.

GRACHEV - LYSYJ (round 9)

38.Qa8? This move is equal to a draw offer, but had Boris found the subtle 38.Kh3! Black would have to solve unpleasant problems. White's idea is that he uses the black king as an 'umbrella', keeping his dangerous a5-pawn alive at the same time: 38...Kxf4 (38...Qd6 39.Qb6! Qd3+ 40.Kh2) 39.Qb6!
Now if, for example, 39...Qe6+ (39...Qd6 40.Kg2! with no checks for Black), then 40.Kh2 Qxc4 41.Qxc6 Qxc3 42.Qxg6 c4 43.Qf7+! Ke4 44.Kg2, and Black might end up two pawns down after the pawns promote simultaneously and a pair of queens is exchanged.
The other try is 39...Kf3 40.Qxc6+ Kxf2 41.Qg2+ Ke1 counting on 42.Qxg6? Qe3+! 43.Qg3+ Kf1! with a draw by stalemate, but after 42.Qg1+! Ke2 43.Qxg6 White keeps good winning chances anyway.
In the game, Black just gave the perpetual: 38...Qe4+ 39.Kg1 Qe1+ 40.Kg2 Qe4+ 41.Kg1. 1/2-1/2 (Annotated by GM Andrey Deviatkin)

Lysyj also admitted that this success is 'the greatest one in his career' and expressed his gratitude to IM Nikolay Ogloblin, who has been his coach for 12 latest years and helped him during the tournament a lot.

Men's Russian Championship, final standings:
1.
Lysyj - 5.5 points out of 9;
2. Jakovenko - 5;
3-7. Khismatullin, Nepomniachtchi, Svidler, Morozevich, Vitiugov - 4.5;
