After the starting loss, Levon Aronian fought back in the second game of his match vs Hikaru Nakamura taking place in Saint Louis. Thus, the score is 1-1. The 3rd game can be watched LIVE at the official website.

Nakamura has strived hard to lose the completely equal position he had got after the opening. First of all, he agreed to change his bishop for the knight which wasn't necessary at all. After the exchange of the rooks White got somewhat better chances in a textbook-type position (B vs N with pawns at both sides). Then Hikaru continued making inaccuracies and allowed White to activate his king.

ARONIAN - NAKAMURA (game 2)

For example, here Black could choose 31...Kd6 (instead of 31...Nb4+?!) 32.Kb3 Kc5 (the pawn endgame after 33.Be3+ Nxe3 34.fxe3 Kd5 should be calculated but in fact it's drawn - AD), but the most striking moment came at move 38.

38...a5?. However good or bad it might be, Black is obliged to capture on b5: 38...axb5 39.axb5 Nd3! Now the straightforward plan of 40.Kb3?! (intending Ka4-a5) doesn't work because of 40...h6! and 41...g5. (Curiously enough, the engines also prefer 38...a5 but then change their evaluation quite quickly - AD).

For a human eye, Black has just given the opponent a protected passed pawn getting a horrible weakness on a5 'as the compensation'. After a few simple moves by Aronian, who has remembered the concept of zugzwang, Black's position collapsed. (Annotated by GM Mikhail Golubev, translated by GM Andrey Deviatkin)
