Petrosian Memorial, Rd. 6: Kramnik Defeats Morozevich and Keeps Chances for 1st Place

Время публикации: 11.11.2014 04:30 | Последнее обновление: 11.11.2014 04:32

Despite Grischuk's sole lead with 1.5 points gap from Kramnik prior to round 6, the penultimate day hasn't eliminated the tournament tension, because Grischuk drew his game while Kramnik won. Tomorrow, on November 11, they will play each other; if Kramnik defeats Grischuk with black pieces he will catch up with him and win the tournament on tiebreak (bigger number of games played as Black). Any other result will be, of course, in Grischuk's favour.

In round 6, the leader has saved an unpleasant position against Levon Aronian. White had got the advantage already in the opening, but Grischuk has managed to hold by precise defence.

ARONIAN - GRISCHUK

24.Bf4. Despite the extra pawns, Black's position looks dangerous. Probably Aronian was counting on 24...Be5 (24...Qf6 25.Re1 is bad for Black) 25.Bxe5 Qxe5 26.d6! exd6 27.Qh4 Bd7 28.h3! (or 29.g3), and White has a very strong initiative. However, Grischuk demonsrates an excellent defence being short on time.
24...Bd7! (gaining the key extra tempo, and it turns out White has nothing special) 25.Qc4 Be5 26.Bxe5 Qxe5 27.Rxb7 Qd6 28.g3 Rab8!? Black could try playing for a win by 28... a5, although after 29. Re1 White keeps definite compensation for a pawn. In time trouble, Grischuk decided that a draw was enough.
29.Rxa7 Ra8 30.Rb7 Rab8 31.Ra7 Ra8 32.Rb7 Rab8 33.Ra7 1/2

Kramnik has outplayed Alexander Morozevich in a very spectacular manner which is in fact more characteristic for his opponent than for himself. For a long time, Morozevich's position was being decent.

KRAMNIK - MOROZEVICH

20.Be2 Nf2. Kramnik thought that 20...exf4 21.Bxg4 would be in favour of White, having missed 21...Ne4!; however, after 22.exf4 hxg4 23.h5 Black is still unsafe.
21.Rf1!? The alternatives are 21.fxe5 dxe5 22.Bxh5 (Kramnik), or 21.Bxh5 at once.
21...N2e4 22.fxe5 dxe5.

23.Rxf6!? Perhaps 23.Rgf3 is more precise: 23...Nxg5 24.hxg5 (24.Rxf6? Be4! - Kramnik) 24...Ne4 25.Rh3 g6 26.Bxh5. Kramnik didn't see how to win after 26...gxh5?, which is in fact bad for Black due to 27.Qe2 Kg7 28.Qxh5 Rh8 29.Bxe5+.
23...Nxf6 24.Bxh5 Kg8!? 25.Be2 Qd6 26.Rh3 (26.Qf5!?) 26...Bxg2!? (26...e4!? - Kramnik) 27.Rg3 (27.Rh2 Qc6! - Kramnik) 27...Bb7 (27...Qc6 28.Bd3! - Kramnik) 28.h5. 'Black's play is very hard, while White is simply building up the pressure' - Kramnik.
28...Re7! 29.Rg1!

29...e4? 'Of course, it's an error, but I've already started to like my position more and more', Крамник said. Nevertheless, the situation would have remained rather unclear after, for instance, 29...Rd8!?.
30.h6! Qh2 31.Nh3! Qxh3. Kramnik: 'If 31...g6 32.Bxf6 Qxh3 then, for example, 33.h7+ Kxh7 34.Qd1 is winning'. 31...Ne8 is a bit more persistent, but Black's position is hopeless anyway.
32.Rxg7+ Kh8 33.Bxf6 Qxh6 34.Rg6+ 1–0

Two other games of the round 6 were drawn without any cataclysms, although White were pressing in both encounters.

Thus, the standings before the last round are: 1. Grischuk - 5 points out of 6; 2. Kramnik - 4; 3-5. Aronian, Ding Liren, Gelfand - 3; 6. Leko - 2.5; 7. Inarkiev - 2; 8. Morozevich - 1.5.

The final round will start today (November 11th) at 10:00 GMT; the crucial game will be Grischuk - Kramnik.
