Cap d'Adge: Karpov's Confidence and Gunina's Magic

Время публикации: 25.10.2014 05:24 | Последнее обновление: 02.11.2014 07:13

The 3rd Anatoly Karpov Trophy is approaching its finish in Cap d'Agde (a French seaside resort of the town of Agde on the Mediterranian sea). The main event is a friendly Russia-France "mixed" rapid match: both teams consist of one GM and one WGM. The Russian men's board is Anatoly Karpov himself who doesn't need any special presentation.

His much younger teammate Valentina Gunina is already famous too, being the current women's European Champion and 2012 women's World Blitz Champion (those aren't by far her only titles).

The host team is represented by the 23-years-old Romain Edouard (#4 in the national rating list) and the French #1 in the FIDE women's list, Marie Sebag. Just for the record, the rapid ratings of the participants are: 2630 for Karpov, 2552 for Gunina, 2651 for Edouard, and 2479 for Sebag.

As a result of the two-days competition, the champions have proved their reputation, winning 5.5-2.5.

63-years-old Anatoly Karpov plays very rarely these days being absorbed by many other activities, such as business, membership in the Russian State Duma, etc. However, as we (and the French players) could see, the glorious champion hasn't lost his skills: on the 1st day, Karpov grabbed all the pawns sacrificed by his opponents and converted them into wins confidently, while on the 2nd day he scored "only" 1.5 points, having granted a draw to Edouard.

EDOUARD - KARPOV (round 3)

32.Qe4?? Qxe4+? Missing 32...Qb3! which would win on the spot: 33.Qf4+ Ka7 34.Re1 Qd3+ and 35...Rd4.
33.Rxe4, and the French GM managed to hold the rook endgame.

Gunina's games were very entertaining, as always. She has proved that her usual adventurous manner can work against men's GMs too.

GUNINA - EDOUARD (round 4)

The game was quiet and equal at first, but after Valentina's "active" 19.b4? Black got the upperhand. Then, she decided to sacrifice a rook for the attack, and it worked. However...
41.Nd4? 41.Qd6+ would be a draw by repetition. The text move should have lost very quickly - had the opponents not been in mutual time trouble!
41...Rce7! 42.Ne6+ Rxe6 43.Qxe6 exf2 44.Qd6+ Ke8 45.Qe5+ Ne7 46.Rh8+ Kd7 47.Qd4+

47...Kc7?? After 47...Nd5 48.Qg4 Kc7 White could just resign.

48.Qd8+ Kc6 49.Rh6+ 1-0

The women's mini-match was 1-1; Marie Sebag managed to lose a symmetrical and absolutely drawish ending in game 1 but then won game 2. The French players still have a chance to strike back today in the blitz part of the match (4 rounds with the 3+2 time control).

The key event was accompanied by several open tournaments, the main of which has finished yesterday. 5 GMs were tied for the 1st place with 7/9 each: Matthieu Cornette, Nikita Maiorov, Christian Bauer, Alberto David, Alexander Kovchan.
