Grand Prix, Tashkent, Rd. 2: Vachier-Lagrave Wins Again and Grabs Sole Lead

Round 2 of the Grand Prix tournament in Tashkent saw yet another victory by Maxime Vachier-Lagrave. After having defeated Caruana a day before, this time he was successful against Rustam Kasimdzhanov. Maxime's victory was the only decisive game of the round, although probably not the most interesting one.

The 2004 FIDE World Champion chose a dubious plan while entering the middlegame.

VACHIER-LAGRAVE - KASIMDZHANOV

Black's difficulties, slight for the moment, grew much worse just in a few moves: 13...d5!? 14.exd5 Bxb5?! This cuts off the a5-knight and improves White's structure. Why not just 14...Nxd5 ?
15.axb5 Qxd5 16.c4! (the strategic pattern has become very unpleasant for Black) 16...Qe6 (16...Qd8!? was interesting but hardly sufficient to solve the problems) 17.Bb2 e4 (or 17...Nd7 18.Nxe5!? Nxe5 19.Re1) 18.Re1 Rad8 19.Bxf6 Qxf6 20.Rxe4

20...Nb3?! (after 20...Rxd3 21.Qxd3 Qxa1+ 22.Kh2 Qf6! the a5-knight would remain off side, although it would be much better than the text move) 21.Ra3! Nc5 22.Re3. Perhaps Rustam had intended to play 22...Qb2 but then saw 23.d4! with an extra pawn for White in a better position - as in the game, though. Black played 22...Ne6 and resigned after 14 more moves.

After 2 rounds, Vachier-Lagrave has grabbed the sole lead with 2 points. He is half-a-point ahead of Dmitry Andreikin and Hikaru Nakamura, who played each other and were content with a quick theoretical draw (similar to Anand - Shirov, Belgrad 1997).
