Fabiano Caruana starts the Grand Prix with beating Sergey Karjakin as Black

The starting round of the 1st stage of the FIDE Grand Prix 2014/15 in Baku saw two decisive games.

Boris Gelfand won over Dmitry Andreikin in a crushing manner which can rarely be observed on the highest level. As White, he managed to astonish Dmitry already at move 7 in a sharp line of the Queen's Indian defence. The game was only 23 moves.

The second decisive encounter of round 1 (Karjakin - Caruana) had been probably the most interesting one for chess fans in round 1. The opponents went for a calm line in the Queen's Gambit Declined, and at first nothing was indication a trouble for the Russian who managed to get some advantage in the middlegame.

KARJAKIN - CARUANA

24.h4! g4 25.Ng5!

The initiative belongs to White, yet the position remains complicated and not totally clear. The next moves saw inaccuracies by both sides, and it was Sergey who eventually played two mediocre moves in a row which worsened his position substantially. The outcome was determined by the blunder when the situation was already in Black's favour.

35.a4? (White had to switch to patient defence after 35.Rxd8+ Rxd8) 35...Rxd5 36.Qxd5 Rc2! 37.Kh1 (if 37.Nxe4 then 37...Qf3+ wins) 37...Rxf2 0–1

According to Karjakin, he went to the lounge at some point preferring to think over the position watching it on the live screen. The relay was showing Caruana in deep thought, but when Karjakin decided to come back he saw Caruana had made his move 15 minites ago...

Four drawn games of round 1 were hardly exciting. Two host players, Radjabov and Mamedyarov, made a quick draw to celebrate 20 years since they had played each other for the very first time. One of the few remarkable moments took place in the game between the 2008 world blitz champion and the 2004 FIDE world champion.

DOMINGUEZ - KASIMDZHANOV

25...Rc8? is a blunder which came unnoticed by White. The Cuban played 26.a4? instead of 26.Ne7+! Rxe7 27.Bxe7 (if 27...Qxe7 then 28.Qxd4!) gaining an extra exchange.

Round 2 pairings are: Caruana - Gelfand, Dominguez - Tomashevsky, Svidler - Mamedyarov, Kasimdzhanov - Radjabov, Grischuk - Karjakin, Andreikin - Nakamura. LIVE GAMES
