Evgeny Sveshnikov kept sticking to his opening specialties in Sicilian Defence. As White, he opted for the Alapin variation (1.e4 c5 2.с3) and chose a very solid line.

SVESHNIKOV - SHIROV

The position is equal, but Shirov played a bit carelessly - 20...Qf6?! The endgame was worse for Black; however, the renowned veteran was in a peaceful mood and the draw was agreed just a few moves later.

The 4th game of the match saw accelerated Sveshnikov variation (4...e5) which transposed into the classical Sveshnikov variation later. This time, Shirov handled the opening better than in game 2. His 11.c4 is quite popular these days. Even though the novelty 17.Bxe6 fxe6 18.Nde3 doesn't look dangerous, Sveshnikov failed to find the best response and White got the desirable position gradually...

SHIROV - SVESHNIKOV

30...Nc6? (missing 30...Nd7!, and 31.Rxd6? fails because of 32...Nf8) 31.c5 dxc5 32.Rd7 Re7! 33.Rxd8+ Nxd8 34.Nxe5 Nf7 (34...Nb7 doesn't change much - Black's position remains very difficult) 35.Nxf7 Rxf7 36.Qxe6 - White won a pawn and converted it into the win gradually. However, Shirov could win much more quickly had he noticed the opponent's blunder on move 39 and played 40.Rd3.
