Women's world champion Hou Yifan shares second in Biel one round to go

After a peaceful Round 8 in Biel where all games finished in draws, the 9th round turned out to be exceptionally fighting - all three encounters finished in White's favor. GM Vachier-Lagrave of France who had all chances to assure first place one round to go, but a lost game against Giri complicates situation.

GIRI - VACHIER-LAGRAVE

(After 24.Rxe6). An interestingly played opening led to an endgame with a slight advantage for White. Yet Black having an extra pawn might be okay, but French player still failed to hold. It might be more safe to play  24...Rd8!? After  24...g4 25.NeNd(interesting was 25...Rf8!?) 26.cNf4 27.ReNe2+ 28.KfNxd4 29.RxbVachier-Lagrave's problems were already obvious...

Radoslaw Woijtaszek outplayed Pentala Harikrishna in Grunfeld: a powerful pressure in the center and the king's flank brought results, although Polish grandmaster missed a chance of winning earlier in the game, the rook sacrifice was as a final step leaving no chance to escape.

WOIJTASZEK - HARIKRISHNA

37.Rxe6! Rgf8 (or 37...fxe6 38.f7+ Rg7 39.d7! сwith an easy win - for instance, 39...Qa8 40.Qf6 h6 41.f8Q+ Rxf8 42.d8Q) 38.Qe5! Qf3 39.Qe3 Qc6 (absolutely hopeless is 39...Qxe3 40.Rxe3 Rd7 41.Re7 Rfd8 42.Kg2) 40.Re7 Rd7 1–0

I there was a surprise of the tournament prize it should have been awarded to the world women's champion Hou Yifan. Having considerably lower rating the Chinese shares second place before the last round.

HOU YIFAN - MOTYLEV

The European champion is definitely not in his best shape. He messed up a game int wo moves in an equal position: 30...Nb7?! 31.Ne2 Nd6? (another mistake) 32.Nf4! and so on.

It's clear that Hou Yifan will win a considerable amount of ELO points in this competition, thus getting closer to Judit Polgar (now distance between them is only 47 points) - the leader of the women's rating list for over 25 years. If taking into account a recent successful performance of Hou at Lopota Grand Prix stage in the current live-rating list she losses Polgar only 11 points.

Standings after 9 rounds:
1. Vachier-Lagrave - 5,5
2-3. Woijtaszek / Hou Yifan - 5
4. Giri - 4,5
5. Harikrishna - 4
6. Motylev - 3

Pairings for Round 10:
Vachier-Lagrave - Woijtaszek
Harikrishna - Hou Yifan
Motylev - Woijtaszek
