Biel hosts a traditional international festival, as we already reported it is a memorial of the legendary organizer Hans Suri.

Although there are only six participants in the tournament, the first round was rich on events. The novelty was introduced in Trompowsky attack in the encounter between French and Indian GMs.

VACHIER-LAGRAVE - HARIKRISHNA

(The position after 1.d4 Nf6 2.Bg5 Ne4 3.Bf4 d5 4.e3 Bf5 5.g4 e5!). The game gradually calmed down despite a quite active start in the opening stage. White eventually got somewhat worse position, but managed to hold with a timely blow in the endgame.

47.Nxc5! Kxc5 48.Ke4 Nc3+ 49.Kf5 Ne2 50.Kxg5 Ng1 51.Kxh5 Nxf3 1/2

The Moscow variation of Sicilian defense was played in two other games (1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.Bb5+). Motylev was less accurate when his opponent Woijtaszek in an initially equal endgame and eventually lost in a mutually sharp position.

Anish Giri suffered a loss against the women's world champion Hou Yifan, his opening experiment turned out to be unsuccessful.

HOU YIFAN - GIRI

8...d5?! (8...Nc5 has been played earlier in this rare position) 9.exd5 Bc5 (after 9...Nxd5 White gets initiative due to better developed pieces, however, this may not be the decisive point) 10.Qd2, and the Chinese accurately converted her advanatge into a point (1-0, 28).
