Bergamo: Two Decisive Games and One Adjournment. Jobava's Mistake

In Round 2 of the ACP Golden Classic taking place in Bergamo, Russian GM Nepomniachtchi was defeated by Wesley So of Philippines.

Baadur Jobava went on with a rare line in Sicilian against Emil Sutovsky. Earlier it was mostly played by IM Eduardo Limp. Sutovsky sacrificed the pawn after the well examined theory. Although the energetic attack brought White a point, it is probable that Jobava could escape several moves before he resigned.

16...Bc4 (easier way was 16...a6! with the following idea 17.Bxc6 dxc6 18.Nd4 Rh5) 17.Nd6+! exd6 18.Qf6 Rg8? (correct was 18...0–0 and White can hardly get anything more than a draw 19.Bxg6 Nxe5 20.Be4 Bxf1 21.Rxf1 Qc7)

19.e6! (less accurate 19.Bxc6?! dxc6 20.e6! gives Black an ability to hunt for more opportunities) 19...Ne5 (Black objectively losses after 19...Bxe6 20.Bxc6 dxc6 21.Rae1 Kd7 22.Rxe6 fxe6 23.Qf7+ Kc8 24.Qxg8+ Kb7 25.Qxg6!?) 20.exf7+ Bxf7 21.Rae1 1–0

Daniele Vocaturo and Zoltan Almasi encounter is adjourned, apparently the stronger side i.e. White has less chances to win then Black to draw.

(the game was adjourned after 40...Bd5), White's best chance to play for a win is 41.Nd3.

  • Two more games were adjourned in the Amsterdam tournament ACP Golden Classic. There is no doubt about the future outcome of one of them: Gata Kamsky will win against Krishnan Sasikiran. Le Quang Liem has an extra piece with black against Baadur Jobava, but it's possible that the Georgian, who wrote down the secret move, won't decline the options of exploiting the opponent's open king and delivering a perpetual check.

  • July 16th, 2012 will be marked in chess history as a day when the game was adjourned again after a long pause. Anna Muzychuk seized the opportunity mentioned in the regulations of the ACP Golden Classic and adjourned the encounter against Baadur Jobava on move 41.

  • The second edition of the "unusual" tournament organized by the ACP will be held from July 12-20 in Bergamo, Italy. The interesting part about it is that the players will be competing under the same time control as was used in the World Championship matches in the Golden Era of chess: 2,5 hours/40 moves + adjournment.

  • None of the games of Round 4 of the ACP Golden Classic reached the logical finish. Kamsky - Ivanchuk encounter finished in a quick draw, while Emil Sutovsky and Anna Muzychuk used the right to adjourn the game.

  • The first draw was registered today at the ACP Golden Classic. Emil Sutovsky applied a rare move 12.h3 in a Spanish Game against Gata Kamsky; here white let black bishop to take g4 square.

  • 'If the tournament isn't going your way, it's until the end'. Baadur Jobava's performance at the ACP Golden Classic tournament can be described approximately in that way. The Georgian grandmaster didn't feel anything other than suffering, which he created for himself, especially with the move 13...е6, during his game against Emil Sutovsky.

  • Baadur Jobava once again beat Daniil Dubov. Last time it happened at Bronstein Memorial, the win then brought Jobava overall victory in competition.

Now the opponents met in Round 6 of EICC. As many of Jobava's games, this also can be marked as "unusal." In a sharp position Baadur sacrificed the queen for the rook and the knight, obtained enough compensation and managed to built a threatening construction for the White king. Both players did their best up tp 40th move.

  • An unattractive, at first glance, draw in 17 moves took place in Round 3 of the competition held in Amsterdam between Ivanchuk and Sutovsky. Actually, it was logical and interesting in its own way. A well known variation of the English opening took place.

  • Jobava's game was the most interesting again

  • Round four of Tata Steel Chess was played in B-Group today. All seven games turned out to be decisive. Georgian grandmaster Baadur Jobava gained another win.
