The European Chess Union got an official approval for holding some of its events under UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) patronage. The first such event will be the 15th European Individual Women’s Chess Championship, which will take place from 5-18th July, 2014 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The ECU says it is the second historical success for European and world chess after recognition by the European Parliament.

The ECU also reminds "on 12th May, 2014 in Paris, the President of the European Chess Union, Mr. Silvio Danailov, and the President of the French Chess Federation, Mr. Diego Salazar, met with the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Mrs. Irina Bokova. During the meeting Mrs. Bokova expressed the commitment of UNESCO’s experts to work on the possibility of the ECU project “Chess as a UNESCO intangible world heritage”. The goal of the project will be official recognition of chess as an intangible world heritage. To achieve this recognition, the European Chess Union will establish a special commission in its structure, dedicated to this topic."
