The Catalan opening is considered to be one of the pet openings of Vladimir Kramnik. No surprise he gained several outstanding wins in number of gamesincluding during the world title match. However, in the recent years the opening brings no wins. GM noted that at the press conference after his game against Anish Giri in Round 3 of the supertournament held in Stavanger: "I drew several "catalan" games, so it must have been the right time to start winning as black..."
Stavanger you haven't seen. Photo report #2

Kramink's opponent helped him to realize that plan after the opening: Giri's maneuver with the bishop f4-d2-c3 with 15.Nd2? following led to a powerful initiative for black after 15...f5. The computer didn't find allof Kramnik's choices correct but as Vladimir noted fairly in a practical game White has a trouble in finding all the flawless moves. Anish missed the last chance by not taking the knight on 41st move: the knight that spent most of the game on f3 and one should note did it very successfully.
