One of Grand Prix Stages Is Planned to Be Held In Baku

This was announced by the Vice President of the Azerbaijani Chess Federation Mahir Mamedov. 

"We are plannig to hold that competition, but the dates are not known yet. The fact is that FIDE doesn't know the exact number of the stages and the number of players willing to participate. I hope this will be figure out in the nearest future. Seemingly, now FIDEis busy with the coming presidential elections which will be held during the Olympiad in Tromso. By the way, we are plannig to held the Day of Azerbaijan at the Olympiad, we will offer the presentation on the World Chess Olympiad 2016 which will be held in Baku. In general, the preparation is following the schedule and I am sure all will be done in accordance to high standards," extratime.az quotes Mamedov.

The FIDE President's visit to Azerbaijan is connected to the signing of contracts for the Olympiad 2016 and World Cup 2015 scheduled to be held in the capital of the country.   • Today the FIDE General Assembly wil decide the place where Olympiad-2016 is going to take place. The main candidate is Baku, who offered a wide presentation of Azerbaijan bid the night before. Apart from Baku, the other candidates are Bulgaria and Estonia. 

  • The 2016 Chess Olympiad will take place in Baku while Chess-News chief editor was promised to be given an accreditation even today. 

  • Garry Kasparov gave an interview [in Russian] to azerisport.com after visiting the presentation by Baku representatives on holding Olympiad-2016. This is what he thinks about the organization of the ongoing Olympiad:

  • The Azerbaijani President's official website published Ilkham Aliyev's order to create the Organizing Committee for holding the World Cup 2015 and Olympiad 2016 which are planned to take place in Baku. The First Deputy Prime Minister Yakub Eyyubov has been appointed as a Chairman of the Committee.

  • The FIDE Presidential Board meeting held in Tsaghkadzor is attended not only by Kirsan Ilyumzhinov but by another president: the honored guest of the meeting is the President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan. The question of the participation of the Armenian team at the World Cup 2015 and Olympiad 2016 was discussed at the press conference held on the first meeting day. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov noted there are no obstacles for the Armenian team to participate in any of them.

  • Several minutes ago we have talked to Kirsan Ilyumzhinov who is now in London. The FIDE president ensured the current men's Grand Prix series will be continued. All the stages will be held as planned, only the venues may change. Namely, the 3rd stage scheduled on 17.04 - 01.15 will be held in Zug, Switzerland.

    "The contracts signed with the players won't be changed. All the conditions remain the same," Ilyumzhinov added.
